Recording question

This is a special section, perhaps temporary, to help our man Timmy1 with his efforts to assemble a working 8J10 Wilcox-Gay Recordette for experimental record cutting. The reasons for this will be explained shortly, but please do check in and help! He's a great guy with a worthy project.

I got my cartridge back from gib and it works fine it plays nice. I am trying to record on cd does it matter which side and I took a 5-16 nut and drilled it out to fit the spindle and it fits right in the cd hole but the cd slips on the turntable.

Use tape to hold it in place on your platter. A couple of pieces at the edge of the disc.

Im with todd, definitely use tape to hold it down.
also, when trying to cut grooves onto a CD, I've done this:
-you should be cutting the shiny side
-depending on your lathe, either face of the stylus might be useful
on my recordette I could get some results with the regular stylus face, and also with the back side.
this was because I couldn't change the angle of the cutting arm on the recordette.

on the 6N, I only use the back side of the stylus, and a backward tilt.

hope that helps!

Yes, the side that goes down in the cd player. What he meant was don't cut into the foil side.

I put on the edge of the cd and turntable but it does not hold it good and I used electrical tape.

Electrical tape isn't very good. Maybe try some Gaff tape?

If I put tape on the cd would it interfere in cutting

You only put pieces on the outer edge.

I tried recording on a cd and it worked. I recorded from the radio but you can only play it back once or twice before it starts skipping. I am going some solo plates. does it matter which side you record on and you probably have to cut off the rim of the plate? thanks

Ah, so nice to get an update!!!!

Yes, absolutely, you have to cut the rim off the picnic plate, and cut or drill a hole in the middle.

I wonder why the CDs start skipping after a couple plays. I'm guessing the playback stylus wears out the grooves.

I can record on a cd it is loud but when I go to play back with a new play back needle the arm moves across the cd you have to hold it back slightly.

Actually you want to drill a 9/32 hole for the center hole and I have had good luck with solo plates, they seem to be a better quality plastic, and cut on the eating side of the plate.
