new tests:

Pictures of no sound grooves, also pictures of light pressure and heavy pressure on the stylus. seems its the lacquer that is getting me into troubles, as my first attempts to record were more successful but still got hiss, now with no sound I still have hiss,

I also test the sound chain as Markrob indicate me and I plug the last end to a speaker and sound was good so I think the problem is the head or the lacquers....
I tilted it backwards a little but I still got the same problem. Loud hiss and distortioned sound. When I send audio to the head this sounds loud and vibrates. so I don't think its the head whats causing me troubles.

A) little pressure to the head.

B)more pressure to the head

C)Recording with sound but loud hiss

I will buy new lacquers %&$%&$&%(/&%%&$

Hi,

Hiss, aside, I think you have problems with your head. I'm not seeing much excursion on the cut and you seem to be getting pretty high levels of distortion. I wonder if the magnet is weak and needs recharging? Can you read the average AC voltage you are applying to the head during cutting? Did you end up removing the RIAA bass cut and only boosting highs?

Mark:

I set all eq flat except highs at 10 to 13+db, max as you recommend,
Im reading the VU meter AC and I don't get it far from 3V AC.
My head is 8 ohms.

How can I know if this is a head issue?
thanks Mark for your answer.

Today I recorder silent cuts but theres still hiss
could be lacquer problems? my lacquers seems to be from the mid fifties.
maybe they got hardened

best regards Richie.-

Hi,

First, it would be a good idea to get test record with a 1 Khz 5 cm/sec reference. You can find these on ebay. If you can't obtain one, lookup the specs on your playback phono pickup and see if they provide an output voltage spec. Typically, they would have a rating of 3.5 mv at 5 cm//sec at 1 Khz.

Since the head is rated as 8 ohms, try cutting a 1 Khz sine wave with 2.83 Vrms measured at the head terminals with a digital meter set for AC Volts for a 30 seconds or so. This represents a 1 watt drive level. Play this back and capture it. Without changing any gain settings on your capture setup, record the reference tone and compare the two. If the head is working well, the two should be with a few db at this drive level. IF you have a manual for the head it might even provide the sensitivity. If you don't have the reference disc to compare. Connect the meter directly to your head and read the voltage. It should be close to the number published for you pickup.

Hi,

That record seems to be lacking. Its more of a consumer product. I would look for a CBS STR-100. This is a more professional geared disk

http://www.discogs.com/No-Artist-Stereophonic-Frequency-Test-Record/master/615351

Note that it has 3.54 cm/sec L and R reference tones along with some other very useful tests. These are long out of print, but you can You can find them on ebay. Just make sure its not in bad shape.

Dear Mark:

Heres a recording at 1khz sine wave with 2.8V max
1khz sine wave.mp3
Foto del día 17-06-15 a la(s) 22.46.jpg
and another shot with a deeper groove also 1khz sine wave at 2.8V
1khz sine wave 2.mp3
Foto del día 17-06-15 a la(s) 22.46 #2.jpg
I have check out the head and seems to be stuck a little, cannot disassemble it completely but some parts I did.
seems due to age the gums got hardened a little. (as STUDIORP said before :P) I move the pivot with a small screwdriver and got loose a little, will try it some other day to see it that improves something. the other thing is that my fault,,,I was pressing the stylus screw too much, does this affect the movement of the stylus?

best regards.-
