On a lark I took some chip outside and lit it. Wow. It is violently flamable. Literally burst into flame.

Thinking of taking some camping to start fires with...

Hahaa, awesome. We usually save some up all year and make a giant one for the forth of July. The best way to do it is to light the match, blow it out, then while the match head is still red hot, drop it on the pile and run away quick...
It will smolder and usually make a giant smoke cloud, then the smoke & chip ignite like a flame from hell. I've got a VHS of it here somewhere from when I was about 10 year old,,, the flame went as high as the light post!
As you've discovered, it's highly toxic to breath and leaves a nasty stain on the street so beware, it's probably responsible for the whole in the ozone layer...

For even more July 4 fun, tamp a load into a toilet paper tube, seal the ends.
bit of safety fuse. Keep your distance, then BANG!

Ain't nothin like guncotton......!

Just like everyone else, I could not resist lighting chip on fire either.

Emptied my chip jar on the driveway and tossed a match on it! Pretty cool.

I can't remeber who told me the story, but they said that cutting guys at radio stations used to save their chip and light some in the control room while the DJ was on mic. They would crack up outside watching the guy trying to maintain his composure on-air, while the equivalent of a smoke bomb is filling up the room!

I thought that was pretty funny. Lathe nerd humor.

My brother used to work as a parking meter attendant downtown, and he noticed there were melted records all over. Turns out some bums were lighting them and huffing the fumes to get high. Mmmm... PVC fumes...
