A spot for keeping track of especially cool (informative, fun) videos, photos, scans and other links about record cutting. (You can post them in other sections. Eventually they may end up here.) NOTE: Please put *Circuits, Schematics and Manuals* in the section with that name.

Hello all, I am interested in lathe cut records at a time. Yesterday I had the lathe cut, and I do not know much about it, I think it's made in Japan Because it use 100V.

Can someone introduce me more about this machine? I want to know about;
- Is it mono or stereo records?
- About styli, is it sapphire or diamond?
- Kind of blank disc to appropriate for use? I can find it on Polycarbonate, PVC, Acrylic

Thank you for answer

I think the picture shows a lathe called a "Vanrock" or "Atom" or Atom may be a model of Vanrock there is a few models, if you do a search on these words they have been mentioned on this forum in the past
Made and I think only available in Japan.
There is a couple of YouTube entries for this I recall.
Hope that helps

In the photo it looks like there are two VU meters so it must be a stereo recorder.
Nice machine for it's age.

If you read my post I say it possibly a model of vanrock and I still think it is.
I have definitely looked at a picture of this model before.
Regarding the the 2 dials I think it's more likely one is for Audio level and the other is for heater current
I do not believe that head to be stereo basically it's too small.

While you were cutting a cd, came out the chip near the stylus ? If so, you must regulate the cutting pressure, otherwise you wear the needle.

Then, how many cables are there from the out of head, 2 or 4 ?

4 cables ? This head could be stereo, or mono with a feedback coil.
For know this, you must check with a ohm meter .

I highly doubt this cutterhead is stereo or feedback. It looks like a 1-C or a 1-D.

One wire pair is for the mono drive coil. The other is for a heater wire.

Mysterious Japanese lathes

A fellow in Thailand, who I hope will join the site, wrote to me and sent a picture of his lathe. It's a Japanese lathe, looks very 1970s to me. He said it is mono and he wonders if it could be made stereo.
van-rock.png
He also sent a link to this video [same video shown earlier in thread]. It appears to be a similar but distinct model: note the number of meters. He says that on his, one meter is input and the other is output.

ah ha. This is a redundant thread. He was only calling it a Vanrock because of unsubstantiated claims in that prior thread. Merging with older thread.

it is similar! It is not the same. (One meter, turntable not as far to the left, maybe not in a carrying case.) I wonder if these were mass produced. Interesting that they are so rare. WHAT is the story???

I am not convinced that it is a VanRock. You may be right, but I'd like evidence.

For comparison, here is the doomed Vestax VRX-2000 Vinyl Cutter:

And here is a known, verified Vanrock, which was also apparently sold as the Atom:

It was discussed in this thread:
