Various Scully/Westrex/Capps stuff

Post: # 25025Unread post Virtalahde

I have a ton of papers and drawing that came along with my Scully. It's quite a bit of an effort to scan all of it, so let's try it the other way around:

Is there anything in particular you're missing?

Anything on the qualities of pre-1948, "standard groove" styli from Capps? really, any Capps styli info might be interesting!!!

I think I only have the pitch computer related stuff, but I'll have a look, there's a file full of brochures, too. I think I'll also list here what I have. One thing I've already been requested is the Scully pitch/depth system, and they're coming up.

Here's some of the stuff I have:

-Capps Vari-Pitch, full installation guide + schematics
-Scully type 261-C variable feed unit schematic
-Scully variable depth unit (transistorized) schematic, dated 11/3/60
-Scully carriage junction box schematic
-Scully push-button panel schematic, S/N sub. 560
-Scully sequence panel with banding unit schematic
-Scully relay box wiring for single phase motors
-Scully relay control panel schematic, dated 7/9/59
-Scully aluminium base wiring
-Westrex 3DII + 1700A schematics (the later model)
-Schematics + documentation for the op-amp based Westrex constant velocity EQ's
-Some documentation for setting up the 3DII recorder, seems pretty rare

And the real treat is this: Full file of Scully recording machine. Including:
-Electrical circuit details (schematics and detailed description of the action taken by each function)
-Black & white photos of the Scully lathe with number indexing

The latter is referenced to a complete set-up guide with topics:

SCULLY DISC RECORDING MACHINE
INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENTS

1. Machine set-up
2. Ending line adjustment
3. Lead-in line adjustment
4. Cutter drop and tape start adjustments
5. Operation of machine
6. Belt adjustments
7. Intermediate yoke thrust adjustment
8. Turntable shaft bearing adjustments
9. Feed screw thrust adjustment
10. Feed nut adjustment
11. Variable feed idler pressure
12. 8 and 32 pitch solenoid adjustment
13. Cutter saddle adjustments
14. Vacuum turntable
15. Speed changes
16. Feed ranges
17. Lubrication

Is there any interest for the whole manual? Seems like it covers everything to me.

EDIT: I now realize this topic really should be in the circuits/schematics/manuals subforum. I'll post my scans there.

Hi Jaakko,

I'm could use:

-Scully type 261-C variable feed unit schematic
-Scully sequence panel with banding unit schematic

Eventually I'm going to try and get my variable feed unit running and I don't have much documentation on it. The schematic would be very helpful.
Thanks!

I'm on it. I'll need to figure out how to scan it all, but trust me, I'll get there.

The schematics are pretty big sheets of paper.. I'll try to take a photo.

To do this correctly you need to scan it in pieces and use something like photoshop to put the pieces together into one file. If you take a picture you'll have to back out far enough to get it all in frame. But, that will make it impossible to read fine details on the schamtic like the values of the components.

Could be. The large schematics are folded into A4 size, so scanning them should be easier when they're already divided in scannable chunks.

I happen to be interested in the photos and:
12. 8 and 32 pitch solenoid adjustment
Appears from the S/N you must have a Model 601. I always dug the lead-in and -out grooves emanating therefrom (the "8 and 32 pitch" which was a bit less on the former and a bit more on the latter).

Yes, it's a vary lathe model. My S/N is #644. The body of the machine says "501" in some parts (like the assembly holding the flywheel the turntable belts hook up to), but I assume this is because the molds have this same label.

My Scully is undergoing a strip-down. It was already partially torn down - first had a Capps computer installed, then gutted and the weirdest system ever was installed. A Linux computer hooked up to a motor controller. Now I'll be hooking up a new Pitch13 box from Flo.

The molds would indeed have dated to when the company was making the older Model 501's (with gearbox instead of pitch knob). The 601 which 'skyonion' has in his studio likewise has parts with 'Scully 501' molds.

Here's a shot I took today:

Image

I'm trying to get it to the state that I can do "cold" test cuts with no audio by the end of this summer. Meaning TT, vacuum, heating and all that is working. The goal is to have it up and running by the summer of 2014.

best of luck getting it running, it seems like you have the right idea and a lot of the technical info.

I am quite interested in the skinny for the Scully 261-C Variable Pitch unit, if anyone has this it would be much appreciated. If not, stay tuned for I will draw it out myself and share it...
