Screeching Sapphires.....

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Screeching Sapphires.....

Hey Yall
I'm having awesome results embossing with a sapphire
However I moved to a 10 in and get horrible screeching where I'm losing a lot of blanks
I've cut a bunch of 10 in with the same needle and never had the problem.
Not until I went back to the 10in after a run of 7in did this happen. It's on the outer edge but still far in. No problem with 7 in.
Anyone else have the issue? I'm being held back for a run I'm already late on because of this.
Is there a way to repolish the sapphire?
Should i just get another and hope for the best?
Don't wanna blow $100 for the same issues
Dang sapphires...
Thanks

yeah that's what I was gonna say. the 10" are usually less flat or have a slight warp which causes the depth to change quickly, hence the screech.
if you add more weight the depth difference is less

Hey Thanks Tragwag! I've also noticed that at 33rpm it's not so high pitched and just sounds like background noise.

Do you have any similar issues when cutting with Diamond?

Appreciate

Are you using my sapphire embossing cones or are you using a backwards cutting sapphire?

If your volume is too hot on an embossed disc it will skip and skate on a cheap crosley.

One of your cones
Yes I'm aware of the skipping and I have a cheap Crosley
My solution was a bit more weight more volume and 33rpm to get rid of the screeching
Test on a crosely for max volume
I've also found a limiter on the input to catch peaks and the output to catch peaks works wonders
Works well.

What kind of limiter do you use to catch your peaks?

What sort of limiter settings are you applying to the tracks?
