Moving Magnet Cutting Head

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Moving Magnet Cutting Head

Hello there!
It's been more than a year that a make of cutting head comes to my mind. All I see are mainly Moving Iron Mono cutterheads and Moving Coil (dynamic) Stereo cutterheads. I haven't noticed any Moving Magnet one (Stereo or Mono) and suppose this maybe didn't work ??
I had a basic idea of the main structure , see drawing below , which maybe I will give a try the following winter.
Basically will attach 2 strong neodymium magnets cylinders (N52 , 3x15mm) directly on the torque tube . Main concept is to avoid any moving part between and minimize tolerances. Have some ideas on suspension but still have to think about that.
*Sure this design has not that strong static magnetic field as opposed to the moving coils heads but on the other hand has the flexibility making the coils you like (thickness etc) something you cannot do on the moving coil design.

Interesting idea, I guess there’s a reason for it having not been done but would be interested to hear the science behind it.

The soon to be released Sillitoe master disc recording system utilizes a moving magnet feedback cutterhead design. Test cuts sound excellent!

I was checking just before and yes , it lools like the usual moving coil heads but he mention is a Moving Magnet one. I had the same thinking about the simplicity of the build and the easiness of recoiling the head in case it is smoked. That gives me a hope :-)
