I think the grooves need to be side to side, though frankly it surprises the hell out of me that it works up to down. I had the same problem (quiet sound, lots of noise, too much bass) when doing this "How to Make a Record Lathe!" video one youtube, which is by Mason who posts here: http://www.youtu...

Was this polyurethane like the clear stuff you seal wood floors with? Cos I always thought about experimenting with it but never got around to it. Did it dry to a hard enough finish to remain flat? Originally when I read this article my main inspiration was to make picture disc/clear records with th...

Yeah, that article is the same technique. Dont know about silicone bathtub chalking, i think u need a lot of silicone for it to work. At least to hold the shape. Do post if it works tho!! I could never figure out what is it that makes some material have more surface noise than other material. That's...

Here's his negative: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3499/3320519168_75a94667fb_m.jpg He made it from a real 7" record, said he had to file down the edges a little to make them less sharp and more cylindrical. The silicone rubber stuff was diff from the Smooth-On but basically the same material. Its ...

okay i did alot of research a year ago on this stuff. unfortunately it was all saved on my laptop and got stolen but i still remember most things., Task 4 has a low enough shrink rate (.0035 in/in) that it wont make the playback skip when playing at 78rpm, which is what is used in the example and is...

Okay, so a friend of mine has been doing this to his 7" and it works perfect. Some surface noise but the material he is using now is cut with filler so im thinking that may be the reason. Turns out when you try to play a duped record at 45 rpm it will probably skip whereas the 33 1/3 one work withou...

Haven't tried the dental plaster yet but the properties look pretty good and its quite inexpensive. A 12" disc of the stuff would take about 15 minutes to dry and cost under 40 cents. Yeah, i was all on this board a year ago trying out the "How to Pirate a Vinyl" with silicone materials, etc. and it...

VRCM: do you have a blog or site that lists your experiments with different media? the thought of cutting into spray-paint is totally thrilling. have you tried cutting in casting resin or liquid plastics? there are some materials that have nice working times. alumilite super plastic has a 5 minute w...

A Question For Those Who Have Cut With Diamond Needles
Let's say I throw down on a good lathe and a diamond cutting head. Will I be able to cut into any reasonable substance? Could I cut records into glass? Could I cast my own blank records in urethane or resin?
Also, do these needles tend to wear down or can you cut thousands or records with them?

Post-Xmas Record Lathe Customer
After Christmas I will be looking for a record cutter, record lathe, etc. Something to start with, preferably under $300, mono or stereo it doesn't matter, just as long as I can interchange new needles and it works or can be fixed with some simple electronic work. My dad has worked on guitars and am...

i just played the fiberglass resin record and it came out just like the 300 plastic material, same amount of surface noise, etc. at first i was thinking because its a pretty thick cast (maybe 1/8" or more thick, whereas a 7" is really thin)... so maybe the surface noise is due to the record being th...

I thought about trying Wood Glue at first but I was told it would always dry sticky. I think something like Mod Podge would be the ideal thing to use but it seems like everything dries tacky and the only way to get rid of it is with a sealant. I'm worried that will kill the sound tho. I suppose the ...

Another Guy Trying to Cast Records
Hi, my name is Adam I just discovered that "How to Pirate a Vinyl" site a month ago and i want to use it in conjunction with my friend's record cutter. Right now my goal is to take a cut on plastic plates or Laserdisc (he can get a decent enough sound for the punk/noise stuff we're cutting) then mak...
