Earliest known recordings. The first is a woman’s voice from 1860 made by Edouard Leon Scott in 1860. His device, a phonautograph, was only intended to graph out soundwaves. He never thought about playing them back:

In honor of cylinders and those who love them

Watching this clip, I realize the biggest problem of cylinder players: the damned horn moves! http://youtube.com/watch?v=ULRtxcMblT8&feature=related Nice detailed look at one in operation. Excellent clip. Dog, those things were loud! http://youtube.com/watch?v=_GTrgCDt1f0&feature=related As tragic a...

I've never been to a record factory and they looked hairy--too much for me to invest in but it doesn't hurt to ask. I'd still like to get a lathe though. That I have room for and I'm certain I could get a good one at an affordable price. I'm not rich but I am certainly not struggling to make ends me...

Another thing, the tutorial mentions that the biscuits are melted and pressed at 193 degrees C. What the heck are they using for the heat?? I had heard it was hot water going through pipes but at 100 degrees C, it starts to boil so at 193 degrees all the water would flash to steam but even getting s...

Thanks for the info, CD4. That's what I was hoping for. I also thought that the mother step was skipped in that tutorial (and, yes, I saw it or one like on "How It's Made"). I'm looking to start investing in the vinyl market in case my CD investment crumbles. So I'm looking for info to help me get s...

Found it. An interview with Gayle Dean Wardlow concerning how H.C. Speir recorded blues artists in the 20s and 30s: Was he already in the talent-broker business, or did be start this after a couple of these bluesmen came to him? No, I think what happened is, he was buying records from the companies ...

Re: Vinyl May Be Final Nail in CD's Coffin (wired mag)

How do you know not enough people would buy vinyl from you? This article seems to be saying the opposite. I said I don't know and I can't take the chance by switching to vinyl since I'd be losing money in two ways if it doesn't sell and not using the means I already have available for free. If the ...

I bought an RCA record around '72 and the sleeve advertised the record as dyna-something, I forget. I thought it was dyna-flex but I guess that wasn't it. The sleeve info talked about how superior it was to regular records. I found it rather flimsy. If you held the record horizontally between your h...

Btw, there was an article in the news about Lime Wire becoming a watering hole for ID thieves. Apparently, the peer-to-peer software opens up all your files and computer savvy crooks can grab pretty much whatever they want. Apparently, Stephen Breyer the Supreme Court judge had his personal informat...

Re: Vinyl May Be Final Nail in CD's Coffin (wired mag)
You talk about vinyl as if its not an option for some bands because they don't have their own lathe, this is simply not true.
I don't see how you can do it if you don't have your own. Otherwise you have to pay someone else. And I'm not paying anyone else when I can do it ...

I was reading about Henry Speir of Mississippi who recorded Charlie Patton, Tommy Johnson and a host of other blues artists in the 30s. It seems he had a portable lathe (there were no tape recorders at this time) that cut wax discs. He had to refrigerate these to preserve them for the plating proces...

Re: Vinyl May Be Final Nail in CD's Coffin (wired mag)

How many bands have a decent recording studio? That doesn't stop them making music Recording is the easy part. I've recorded bands in basements, living rooms, warehouses, even backyards and big boomy churches. All you need are the mikes and a board hooked up to a digital recording unit. My board do...
