Regarding above - unreasonable offers welcome. I just want to free up the space and not have them junked.

3 suitcase cutters - anyone interested?
I have 2 Meissner cutters and 1 Wilcox Gay cutter. The Meissners have the familiar General Industry mechanism with an AM radio. Wilcox Gay has a reel to reel built in. All are in various states of disrepair. I don't want to ebay them and deal with the shipping, and I don't want to send them to Goodw...

Re: 3 Questions: Stylus size, heat and linear
re:#3 I used to think the same thing - if most players track on an arc, why is linear better? The cutting stylus is not round, but chisel shaped with facets carefully designed to cut and polish a perfect groove. When a cutter moves in an arc across the disc, the chisel shape of the cutting stylus do...

Re: Help with New Lathe
is it an old cutter? Decayed or damaged damping material? I don't actually know what the results would be if damping material was damaged, but it's something to check out.

Re: edison red blank recording discs / ebay
If I'm not mistaken, they're being sold in packs of 10 for $10.00, so $1.00 per disc. Does anyone know if the center hole is the same as a standard 45? I have a box of 7" discs that are similar, but with no brand marking. They have a small center hole, and a drive pin hole. The seem to be ok, not gr...

Re: My wilcox Gay / Recordio Lathes
Those machines do not have a lead in or lead out feature. To prevent my playback stylus from sliding onto the paper label and also avoid possible destruction from the drive pin hole, I usually continue cutting a silent groove for a minute or 2 after the end of the recording. That at least give me so...

Re: WTB 10" dubs
I have a feeling they may be fiber based, not aluminum. They don't have the mirror smooth look, and if you zoom in on the drive pin hole, it looks like cardboard going through.

Re: Presto K8 playback arm/needle
I have a similar machine and arm and I did not have any luck playing vinyl even when using a 45 / lp needle. The arm is heavy - and the vinyl was too fragile. It got destroyed. If you have better luck, let me know.

Re: Presto K8 playback arm/needle
I think this will for for you if you're playing 78s. You could probably also use a Victrola needle if you were sure to change it after every play.

Andrews Sisters recording V Disc - 4 Prestos
Stumbles on this video. The Andrews Sisters recording Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy for a V Disc. The end of the video shows cutting room with 4 Presto lathes. It looks like they're cutting 16" at 33 1/3. I always assumed they would have run at 78rpm in that era. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyR97d9hi84

Re: Meissner Model 9-1065
I've had one of these for a few years. With a good cutting stylus and blanks, you should not have a problem getting a quiet groove if the depth and angle are properly adjusted. The sound quality is not great because of it's limited frequency range, but you should at least get a relatively quiet groo...

Re: Question about Moding a 78 rpm Wilcox Gay Recordio
45 x 1.734 % =78.03 pretty close - someone please correct me if I'm off base. That being said, if you slow down a Recordio to playback, you are going to lose high end, which a Recordio is lacking to begin with. I suspect your recording will sound like it's under a heavy blanket. Recordios also pick ...

Yours looks like brand new! I have one, and it does a decent job. Terry made a new rubber roller for me, very inexpensive, and fast service. Private message me. I have documentation I can email you.
Have fun!

Re: seriously?
LOL ok, label me sucker. I bought them cause the description states they will not be chewed up by a victrola needle like an acetate will be. I was curious. At least I'm only out a few dollars. I'll let you know how they hold up under my Victrola sound box.

Re: RCA Victor Model MI-12701
Yes, I have one. It seems to be very similar to the Presto K series. It runs only at 78RPM. I had a new rubber roller built by Jerry's Rubber Rollers. I'm going to see if I can have a 2nd one made to run at 45RPM and see how it goes. The material used to isolate motor rumble from the cutter has hard...

Re: Recording Kronos direct to disc, cylinder and tape
Great project and interesting documentary. I guess the focus was only on the cylinder because of the Edison connection. Will there be a venue for us to hear all results from all recordings?

Re: Twinning
I just found this on the web. http://www.charm.rhul.ac.uk/history/p20_4_2.html extracted from above: 4. Twinning is a result of the faulty operation of the traversing gear carrying the wax blank when being recorded upon by the cutting tool. The grooves, instead of being uniformly spaced about 0.01 i...
