Re: skipping around outer edges
Assuming you're cutting on lacquers: ...I don't know anything specific to the VR recorder, but these are some general things to check/be aware of: - The coating on the the Apollo/Transco discs are generally not flat all the way out to the edge. ( i.e. ripples, bumps and other defects on outer edge w...

Re: cutting both dmm & lacquers with one VMS70?
Some of the DMM lathes were also converted back to lacquer cutting lathes. Who knows where those left over dmm parts went… To my knowledge, Dmm has a hi frequency carrier, different suspension box, head, vacuum system, amp calibration etc etc… unless there would be a purpose built dual lacquer/dmm cu...

Re: Where Were These Pressed?
It's interesting to see how the orientation of some of the yarn threads indicate a flow of vinyl towards the center of the disc.

Re: 7 inch side length question
DMM = direct metal mastering. i.e. cutting into a coper disc instead of lacquer. It represented the state of the art and the last hooray from Neumann in cutting lathe technology before CD's took over. As far as fidelity, the 7"33 can be the worst of the vinyl formats. (inner diameter tracking distor...

+ It might be good to at least get a lacquer ref of the long side so there are no disapointing surprises down the road.

Re: Shure pulling the plug on phono cartridge production
Yea such a bummer, I really hope somebody acquires the assets or at least get's some documentation on the construction & tech specs etc. The company invested so much time & energy in R&D for the progression of vinyl playback technology. The Shure V series was a benchmark reference for many cutting h...

Re: What exactly is "audiophile" quality?
I believe that "Audiophile" is a recording / mixing / mastering aesthetic.. as well as song composition. If that's not present in the recording, then the average public most likely will most likely not recognize it as an audiophile record. So technically if a plant cares enough & has the persistence...

Re: Looking to get records cut in bulk
I just had to post that, all in good fun : ) 10" you can plan on between 10-15min per side @ 33rpm. Amount of low end, stereo image and program time generally dictate what fit's and at what quality. Not all lathes operate the same way so these numbers only apply on certain systems. As for cost, It's...

Back in the day there were 12" copper blanks that refs were cut on.concretecowboy71 wrote:Maybe that is one reason DMM never really took off too.
I don't know if any of the DMM facilities offer copper refs today..??
