Apollo wanted a lot of humidity. Somewhere around 70% seemed optimal. MDC did not like that much. I keep them around 30-40%.

I had the same issue when I moved to a camera.
Another option: set your caliper to a known gap, say 0.002" and look at it under the microscope. Now place a piece of tape on your monitor and mark that distance. Then you'll always have it on screen.

I have some random LED flashlight feeding the scope on my lathe. Hooked it up to a 5 volt wall wart and it's been working perfectly for many years. Experiment. Lots of ways to do it.
