A mystery
Maybe someone can shed some light on this. Single lacquer sent to a pressing plant. Arrived in perfect condition. It was silvered, didn't pass QC - lots bad stuff showed up. Desilvered, lacquer then looked fine. Resilvered, still nasty. Then desilvered again - and again it looked fine. Pics here of ...

Re: Wonky precision platter VR
Try flipping the brass tightening disk over. The direction of the the screw being tightened can create exactly the thing you're describing. Hope it works! J

I’ve found they vary in how much they are dished. They seem to be consistent within a given box, but vary from box to box....

Re: SP10 Tone Arm Fitting...
not exactly an answer to your question, but kinda related....I bought an sp15 and a Jelco arm to use with a VR for cutting lacquers a while ago. In the end, I gave up on it for a few reasons.... 1. without having a base with feet manufactured to fit souri's platform, there's no way to adjust, then f...

Re: Rapid vertical movement w VR
it's happening w both shank and souri blanks. black, clear, etc. so I don't think it's the blanks. with regard to platter - I check level of the carriage arm and then the platter each day. Getting no runout, etc., and the grooves are perfect after the first outer inch. It just seems like it has to b...

Re: Rapid vertical movement w VR
I also have this happening recently on one VR. Tried everything, new oil in dash, rebalancing, more weight less weight, oil screw... still happens every 10 records or so. It will dig deep then bounce out (not out of phase ever). I need to check stability of the bearing inside the TT. Maybe since ru...

Re: Rapid vertical movement w VR
As you have the luxury of having multiple VRs :) I'd start by comparing the dash pot on the problem one against the dash pot on the good lathe. Do they look the same? Is the spring in the same position, top and bottom of the cylinder? Is the plunger contacting the sides or is there any additional f...

Re: Rapid vertical movement w VR
having a similar issue from time to time over here, it's been due to blanks and too much head weight. I back off just a touch and it fixes itself. this problem only happens on my 2nd VR, where the spring/dashpot is in worse shape Tried varying weight lighter and heavier - no improvement. Anybody el...

Rapid vertical movement w VR
Wondering if any one has seen this before. I have 3 VR's. Been cutting with 2 of them for about 6 years, I guess. Added the 3rd a couple months ago. One of them started exhibiting this behavior a couple weeks ago - couldn't figure it out so I took it out of commission. Now another one is doing exact...

Re: New: Phonocut Desktop Disc Cutter
Interesting project!!!! Regarding blanks, warranty, etc as described below. Be careful of this - it is not legal in the US. The printer companies (HP, Canon, etc) tried this, and it was ruled not legal. Now, using 3rd party ink for printers does not invalidate warranty. https://topclassactions.com/l...

Re: I want to buy some lathe cuts, who getting highest quali
I believe my question is objective and sound: 'How good can a durable lathe cut get in terms of accuracy, fidelity and frequency range?' We all know what a good pressed record played on quality equipment sounds like. My current understanding is that lathe cuts can't equal the frequency reproduction...
