Re: Synchronous AC motor for leadscrew
Is there any reason why one shouldn't use a synchronous AC motor with a variable frequency drive unit, to drive a leadscrew on a lathe? The idea is to use a belt and pulleys to get a reduction so the motor can spin faster than the leadscrew. Is there anything speaking against it? Why not just take ...

Re: Yellow Label Audiodisc
This old thread has some advice....check out what mossboss wrote. http://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4281&p=26247#p26279 But also heed what I wrote there. You really do run the risk of damaging a pricey stylus when you use old lacquers. Proceed with great caution. Thanks Steve. Just cut...

Re: Neumann AM32 - Looking to sell in original condition
Sweet machine. Just for the goofs .. I am sure that it wouldn't fit in my house and quite probably not in my budget as well - what is the appropriate value for a machine kike that?

Yellow Label Audiodisc
I was able to negotiate a fair price for about 50 yellow label 10" Audiodisc blanks. Any tips how to treat them to get them back into shape (if they are in fact to tough to cut) ?

Audio Chain With Compressor
setup.jpg Howdy: Please take a look at my audio chain. I integrated a compressor / de-esser with a side channel via equalizer. I don't want the equalizer in the signal path because it's a piece of junk that introduces distortions and clips easily. So - I use it to drive the compressor's side-channe...

Ah. Thanks. I had the hope that one could 'erase' a lacquer by heating itopcode66 wrote:To soften up the brittle old lacquer.

Re: Laquer find
just a nice find: at a fleamarket I found a large batch of records from the 'american school music project' published by the red cross. For some reason these are all 12" laquers (audiodisc + pyral) and behold, many of them were only cut at one side. Now they are going in the oven:-) Why would you p...

Re: Cutting 'For sale' sign ...
Possibly Ask the Walmart guys on what the material made from could be acrylic not sure. You can also order a clear records from myshank.com I would cut the track on a clear record using a diamond stylus then glue it On top of the for sale sign. You will get good results Well - I am not quite ready ...

Cutting 'For sale' sign ...
4sale.jpg Picked a "plastic" type "For Sale" sign up a the local WalMart and cut "Rock Around The clock" into it :) I used an unheated Sapphire stylus and it actually produced a nice, easy to clean thread. The record player tracked it without problems - but the surface noise is like AM radio. There...

Re: Using solvent aka Windex / Ammonia on PC
I would be careful in that ammonia can be a solvent for some types of adhesives. The coils for most all cutterheads are held together by an adhesive. They are also typically glued in place. It seems a little risky to be cutting a disc wet with ammonia. I wouldn't want it to potentially leach into t...

Re: WTB 10" dubs
I have a feeling they may be fiber based, not aluminum. They don't have the mirror smooth look, and if you zoom in on the drive pin hole, it looks like cardboard going through. Interestingly I wrote the seller about a week ago and told him I would by 'em if he includes shipping. He rejected my offe...

Using solvent aka Windex / Ammonia on PC
While I was surfing the net, I read about a guy who wrecked his Polycarbonate fish tank while cleaning it with Windex. I looked it up and Ammonia is indeed a solvent. So - I had to try it on a PC imprint. I sprayed the PC disc with Windex and let it sit for a minute or two then went to do a quick te...

Thanks for the info. But 40 Bucks (including shipping) is too expensive for old blanks that may not even be usable anymore.

Re: Horray .. the first keeper :)
Compliments, but how is possible that the type C that goes max. within 10khz (declared by factory) sounds very good ? Then in this head there isn't feedback system as in type D. Which type of blank and stylus do you use ? This particular cut was made on Apollos with a fairly worn ruby. As to the fr...
