SOLD: Rek-O-Kut Lathe + Presto Head

Hi there everyone, I'm selling my vintage Rek-O-Kut disc cutting lathe and wanted to give the Lathe Trolls first dibs before posting it to Reverb! This 60+ year-old beast cut over 100 records for a project I did several years ago, but it's taking up space and is finally time to go to someone who wil...

Re: DIY heated stylus

Sorry, just getting back to this now. I understand the idea of how this works, but I'm still a little confused on exactly how everything gets hooked together. Could you upload a picture?

Suggested signal chain?

I'm wondering you all have suggestions for proper signal chain. I would be especially interested in reasonably-priced, off-the-shelf, or DIY solutions since I can't blow several thousand dollars on audio gear, much as I might like to! From what I gather, this signal chain is generally: Sound source ...

DIY heated stylus

I've looked over the forum and found bits and pieces, but does anyone have advice for setting up a DIY heating system for cutting styli? I did see this PDF, but I can't quite follow the instructions.

I have a small Presto head, so any suggestions for this in particular would be very helpful!

Re: Why do inverse-RIAA filters reduce sound level?

This is helpful, thanks. My knowledge in this area is pretty limited (I have a good understanding of mic preamps and guitar equipment but this is new territory for me). I did a quick search, but are there any good threads on here about people's suggested signal chains? I think that would be a really...

Re: Reversing an aquarium vacuum pump

soulbear – yes! I was thinking about adding a vacuum platter as well!

leo gonzalez – I got some latex tubing today. I think you're right about the potential for sticking, though the positive of transparent tubing is you can see it's happened! I will test it this week and let everyone know.

Re: Why do inverse-RIAA filters reduce sound level?

That does make sense, thanks Mark!

To clarify: you're saying that I can/should put an amplifier either before (to beef up the signal before being cut) or after (to bring it back up)?

Why do inverse-RIAA filters reduce sound level?

I'm curious why the schematics for inverse-RIAA filters all reduce the sound level, often by -60db or even more? On my lathe (which is new to me, so I'm still getting used to it), the sound level from my filter is too low to cut. The other question would be: where does the filter go in my signal cha...

Re: Reversing an aquarium vacuum pump

Totally right re 90º/180º! Don't think I can edit posts... Glass is probably preferable because it will reduce static (which should, hopefully, reduce the risk of combustion). While you do get to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee :) I wonder if a mason jar with a metal lid would be easier to work with? I'...

Re: Reversing an aquarium vacuum pump

My (rather quick) research is that the high-end lathes use gum rubber tubing, like this from McMaster . I bought some, but the walls were too thick for my 3/16" ID setup. I'm going to try the thinner-walled gum tubing next. I think it's used because it's super flexible, low friction for chips to flo...

Re: Reversing an aquarium vacuum pump

Update: it works great! The overall setup of my vacuum. Might be a good idea to move the vacuum a bit so it doesn't vibrate the table, but works for testing. Re: Reversing an aquarium vacuum pump

I have it all hooked up, but am finishing up a bracket to attach the hose to my lathe. Hoping to do some cutting in the next day or two. @Hole in the jar: I'm going to forgo for now and take my chances :) 5mm is about almost 1/4" – that's pretty big, no? I was thinking more of a pinhole size. I woul...

Thanks dimi751. I didn't know about the small hole – what diameter should it be? Is there a good spot for it to go?

Re: Reversing an aquarium vacuum pump

Suction! I finally got some tubing and fittings that works with the pump (3/16" ID). It's no vacuum cleaner, but it has plenty of suction to pull up sawdust and fine plastic swarf into the jar (a plastic one from the Container Store with an O-ring in the lid). I'll have to test it on the lathe prope...

Re: Reversing an aquarium vacuum pump

Quick update: I got some tubing that fits and plugged everything in. The vacuum seems pretty good! Mine has two inlets (formerly outlets) and so I hooked them together for maximum suction. I don't have small enough fittings to hook up to a jar yet, but I did suck up a few little pieces of wood and t...

Re: Reversing an aquarium vacuum pump

soulbear – I posted a link to the pump I bought, but it was kind of hidden :) Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009YJ4NG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 Re reversing the pump, see the images above. There is not connection built into the pump, which is why I reve...
