Locked machines I guess. The 4trk idea was a brain fart( I have many!) years ago.

But doing lp's it would be a hassle dealing with the spreads.

I don't chime in here often but back in the 70's I suggested why not lay down the preview on 2 tracks and the program on the other 2 tracks. Of course it would be second gen off the master but seems you could leader and back up the tape precisley. I don't remember why they thought this would not wor...
