Re: Souri still in business?
I'm not being blocked. There's probably some technical issue. Never had an issue with Souri, in contrary, only very good experiences.

Souri still in business?
I tried to order some blanks recently at Souri but got no response. Anyone else with the same experience?

Re: Using vacuum tube amplifiers to power the cutting head?
If you like to replicate the soft tone of music from that era, you should look into preamps which give a lot of color. I can suggest Neve preamps. It doesn’t need to be tube. You have tube preamps which sound ultra clean; used for test equipment. And you have solid state preamps which give a lot of ...

Re: Cutting and health
We can’t speak for others, but our blanks are PETG, totally safe to handle. If using a lathe there’s oil and lubricants too, but also all safe to handle. PETG is FDA approved, and rigid until 60 to 80 degrees centigrade, even then in would only deform. 200 degrees centigrade and it would start to d...

Re: Cutting and health
Hi mate, it's PETG, which is food safe, apparently! Thanks for your reply! In the meantime I checked the site of Souri (which I should have done before posting of course…). There it’s mentioned that all blanks from them are PVC, not Polycarbonate. This is a relief, because PVC is regarded as safe. ...

Cutting and health
I'd be interested to learn about possible precautions one should possibly make when cutting records. Cutting plastics seems an activity with potential risks. Heating plastics may be something one should do with caution or maybe even avoid? Microplastics in your working space is maybe another point. ...

An interesting discussion. However, let’s not forget to just use our ears. By simply trying out the different possibilities you’ll find the sweet spot. In the end, the ears never lie.

Re: Needle accumulated plastic on stylus
I seem to remember Souri used acetone himself for removing plastic, during a two day workshop I did many years back. I guess you’ll get the hang of it once you’ve done it a few times, but I prefer the heating option- I heat it briefly then turn off the heat and remove the crap with a cotton q tip di...

Re: Still possible to get a VR in 2024
Excuse me for my late reply. I agree with the responders above that the VR is the best option for that price segment. The quality is very good. But it all depends on your skills. You can cut very bad records on a great machine. The learning curve can be steep. Expect to make a lot of mistakes but tr...

Re: Question for VR owners (who went for training)
Can't remember about a deposit. But Souri is definitely trustworthy so wouldn't worry about it. I took it with me, car broke after 300 km, spend three days in a German spa called Bad Kreuznach, filled with ex nazi's enjoying longevity- waited for a replacement car and then finally drove off reborn w...

Re: Distortion even at low levels.......
Are the two VR’s connected to one source? I’d look there to start. The chances that both VR’s show exactly the same problem at the same moment seems unlikely to me

Have you checked your d/a converter? I had a clock problem once. It caused sibilance and clicking problems. Somehow the clock at my software didn’t correspond with my converter. Maybe something got reset after a software update. Once I made sure everything was running on the same clock the issue was...

Re: Still possible to get a VR in 2024
@radardoug Maybe he’s not waiting for new customers? The man wants to run his business the way he wants to. Unconventional, yes. But he’s loyal as well. I had a technical problem after many years. He repaired it without charging me anything. That’s also something normal companies don’t do! Simply ac...

Re: Still possible to get a VR in 2024
I would suggest being patient. I’ve connected with him many years ago and after one or two months he gave a date for a workshop at his studio in South Germany. These two days were crucial and gave me a good start. At the end of the workshop we could buy the VR. NB: don’t bugger him with emails, it’s...

Thanks for this information @david34 and @mushroomjesus . Yes, Souri contacted me to say he doesn't do them anymore.
Interesting to read about the different diamond.

High end stylus Souri
Hi, greetings to you all

Does someone have experience with the high end stylus of Souri as advertised on the Vinyl Recorder website? Wondering in which way the transcription is better than the normal stylus…
Thanks

Re: Warped blank records
Actually I never had this problem. Apparently strange if I read all these comments. Of course sometimes there is a warped blank, but it flattens perfectly when I put it on the warm cuttingtable. I use 2mm blanks, heating with the two Souri lamps and between 40-50 degrees C.
