Looking at the connector it looks like an old style Printer cable, I doubt he would have made these up himself when you can buy them cheaply enough, its worth getting one to try.. Sounds like vibration from your vaccum, try cutting without suction and use a brush for the chip to see if it cuts without the noise, is your vaccum leaning / sitting on the table / floor close to the machine?

So, also looking at Ben's photos, the capacitor is sitting on top of a board that is attached to the rear around the connections, if it is a Faulhaber, the model number would usually be stamped in the black plastic (under the board) ;-)

Vinyl Recorder - RC shock silicone oil. RC tires on the cutterhead, so seems quite fitting! I believe it is 500cSt or around 60wt. Can't remember! Agreed, I did the same conversion, only had new feet turned so it sat the same height as the original 1210,
