How thick are the wires that come out of the cones and connect to the stylus holder? Can you tell what type of material it is?

not sure about the material but these are tubes, not wire. for light weigh.

If you have decent soldering skills, should be no problem. One thing to keep in mind. IIRC, the boards are single sided. These are easily damaged and you should take care when desoldering.
