Re: Systems Phonics Nebula

It's a very good head. However IMHO: Learn to make decent sounding cuts with the standard system first. It can make excellent sounding records with the right approach and a few tweaks, once you've sussed out how it works. All the information is out there and a lot of it on here. Then maybe after a f...

Re: ElasticStage = Lasers (By Their Own Claims)

How much protesting is actually too much? The limit has been reached here.... methinks. One of the people behind ES ran a well known 'vinyl carving' operation for 15 or so years. A mutual acquaintence of ours furnished me with some interesting details on what happened subsequently. Suffice to say: ...

Re: ElasticStage = Lasers (By Their Own Claims)

I've been sent four of their discs so far. They're bog standard lathe cuts on 1.5mm black PETG, and instead of a stylus heating unit they bought a big printer, blanket advertising and an enormous pile of smoke and mirrors with their multi-millions of investment capital. They can make all the claims ...

Re: everything you wanted to know about grampian heads and way m

Looks like the bbc took all of this down. Anyone know if this info still exists anywhere where I could download it? It's all still there. You can put the report numbers into the search box as well (change the underscores in the original links for dashes, e.g. 1944_05 becomes 1944-05). https://www.b...

Re: VR: voltage to LPI info needed

I did something similar, but wanted something where I entered a side duration and it gave me a voltage so that everything fit perfectly in the cuttable area. I measured the RPM of the feedscrew at various voltages and used the 'forecast' function in Excel (or similar) to fill in the gaps. There is a...

Re: Irregular Groove Spacing on DIY Lathe – Need Help Diagnosing the Cause

It seems to me that wear (or perhaps manufacturing tolerances) in the bearing/spindle somehow causes the platter runout to change on every other rotation, it's very obvious when using a dial indicator, and I can only assume it's something to do with the magnets and coils of the direct drive motor un...

I mean the music has been edited out, leaving the run-ins, track breaks and run outs.

Re: Elasticstage - short run record production

A friend sent me one of their discs. To be fair, it might be a rogue, but this is a straight recording of how it arrived (first play, music removed).

I do sorta like the way that the video which namechecks you actually has more views than any other...

Christ, what a weirdo.

Actually, have a dig through the videos. There appears to be a lot of tampering going on. e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHY1HEOyM2M

Re: AMI Continental 2 Jukebox Cuts

I don't have any experience of that particular AMI (or not knowingly anyway) but I recently did a load of discs that went in a '57 Wurlitzer 2100 on 1.5mm and they all played perfectly. I believe 2mm can cause issues with the mechanisms on many models, so best to play safe.

Re: Elasticstage - short run record production

I have to admit, it looks very professional! If the sound is also good, then all respect. My doubts lie more in the business concept than in the motivation and the product. But if it's good for the customer to get 50 pieces quickly and easily, then yes, it's good for the customer. The first copy wa...

Re: Elasticstage - short run record production

Someone I know is using their services at the moment. The results have apparently been somewhat variable (as far as the discs go, at least; the sleeves are apparently excellent quality) but good enough for him to carry on using them for a second project. A shame to see the usual 'big investment oper...

Re: The farmer and his plow - When I set out to build a record cutter

I just had a listen to a few of the files. Ignoring the platter drive (the 50hz and some flutter, particularly on the Santana recording) and concentrating on the actual sound, I think you've done an amazing job. The only real faults I can hear are going to be due to the material (sibilance on The Me...

A 'holiday', you say? I've heard of those, but never experienced one.

Fantastic work as ever. We shall be waiting for when you get back!
