VMS80 pitch computer becoming less efficient throughout the day

Hey Trolls, I have this issue with a Neumann VMS80 lathe regarding it's ability to calculate how much disc space will be taken up. When the lathe is started in the morning it works great, it will do a dry run and accurately calculate the percentage amount a side will take up. The problem is, towards...

Does anyone know how to reduce the sample rate when you export out of Sadie?

I've been looking in the manual and I can't seem to find how to reduce the sample rate while exporting from Sadie. You can reduce the bit depth and add dither easily but changing the sample rate doesn't seem to be an option. For instance, I'm working in a project that's 48kHz and the client has aske...

Re: Tips on how to get a louder cut?

I'm cutting lacquers on a Neumann lathe. Don't take this the wrong way, but how does one get to the point of cutting on a Neumann without knowing this? Hehe. No offence taken. We all have to learn at some stage. I know how to cut at a good level but checking against similar music cut by others i'm ...

Tips on how to get a louder cut?

I'm wondering how to get my cuts louder. I'm doing the normal stuff like take a little bass out, use M/S EQ to remove stereo width and de-essing all so I can push the level and get louder cuts. I'm just wondering if anyone has some ninja techniques on how to get more level? I'm cutting lacquers on a...

Re: Which digital microscope do you use for cutting?

I've already got a microscope that you can see the grooves by looking down an eye piece but looking at getting a microscope camera hooked up to a monitor to make it more convenient. I've been looking at getting one of these (link below) as I've seen most of the big cutting studios have them on their...

Re: What is everyone using to offset their preview signal in a DAW?

hey hey, i use logic and the built in sample_delay i like things to be sample-accurate. so first thing to do is to find out how many samples you have per revolution. e.g. use a click track: one click per revolution, it needs to produce That's a cool way of doing it. After doing that test, how many ...

Re: Can't see much through VMS80 microscope. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. The lathe has been looked after and been maintained. I've looked into the microscope issue and found that the camera has a bulb inside it that's broken, I think if I fix it then I might get a clearer picture.

Re: Hissing on Records how to get rid of it?

Are you cleaning your stylus correctly? Make sure that it's squeaky clean before every cut! Also, with Neumann lathes the stylus is heated which prevents hiss. I'm not familiar with Presto lathes but if they have that function then make sure it's working correctly.

Re: tell me your experiences with the elliptical equaliser

It's fascinating to read your technical info about an EE. I didn't know that it actually boosts frequencies above the cut-off frequency - very cool! Is this considered to be a problem? Also, are you hoping to avoid this in your design? As I stated in an earlier post I use a m/s plugin to mono the ba...

Re: Disappearing grooves mid way through cutting lacqures??

This problem with the grooves has happened before. Many many years ago we manufactured lacquer for a company that made blank recording disk's for vinyl record production and the same thing was happening and we were able to correct it. After the lacquer is coated on the aluminum substrate, it quickl...

Re: Disappearing grooves mid way through cutting lacqures??

Is there more resistance on the slide where the problem occurs? Is the slide well lubricated? When you fast wind over the problem area is the action as smooth as other spots? Those are the first questions I'd ask. I'd look for a mechanical issue first and then look for an electronics issue. It coul...

Can't see much through VMS80 microscope. Any ideas?

I'm using a microscope on a Neumann VMS 80 and can see grooves through it to an extent but they aren't very detailed and I can't measure them using the reticle. The reticle is black and when over layed with a dark lacquer it's impossible to measure anything, surely this wasn't Neumann's intention wh...

Re: Disappearing grooves mid way through cutting lacqures??

I mean is that the groove depth dramatically increases and then decreases for a couple of rotations Funky! it would happen for just one single rotation Like one single 3mil wide strip of the blank is bad and everything else is fine? That's pretty narrow for mechanical thing! Maybe good old VMS80 (t...

Re: tell me your experiences with the elliptical equaliser

I don't bother with a hardware elliptical EQ. I simply use linear phase Fab Filter Pro Q3 VST in in M/S mode to mono the lower frequencies.

Re: What is everyone using to offset their preview signal in a DAW?

Ah, yes. Different topic. Just offsetting one of the stereo tracks by the required delay time is easy enough in any DAW bur you must have a 4-channel DAC. Sorry for the confusion. I now realize that I wasn't quite clear enough! Yeah, I have a multi channel DAC and send out a separate channel and de...

Re: What is everyone using to offset their preview signal in a DAW?

This is probably not helpful, but I use the preview offset on my desk ,I like the ability to be able to hear the audio at every junction at the flick of a switch. Good Luck J Thanks for letting me know your process! What do you mean by a preview offset on your desk? Is you desk digital? as I unders...

First question, which mastering console do you use?
I'm not using a hardware console. I'm using Sadie DAW and an audio interface going to the cutting amps.

What is everyone using to offset their preview signal in a DAW?

What methods are people using to offset their preview signal to the pitch computer? Rather than using a hardware delay unit I've been using DMG audio track control but wondering if there's a better option out there or if it has any downsides.

Cheers!

Re: Disappearing grooves mid way through cutting lacqures??

Perhaps uneven lacquer coating on the disk. The coating may be thinning out in the areas on the disk surface where you are seeing this. Maistrow Good thinking. I was thinking the same but something that made me believe otherwise is it happening in similar places on different lacquers that are all f...
