Re: G.C.M.R Record Lathe
Nice, cheers for the detailled reply ! It's knop's and the lockdown lathe that motivated me to do this aswell. But I had a hard time sourcing many parts needed for the lockdown lathe, and I wanted an automatic head drop feature so I ended up designing my own lathe. I should have used fusion 360 aswe...

Re: G.C.M.R Record Lathe
Again, really nice build ! What's your experience and inspiration for the 3D printing designs ? You seem to have chosen nice manufacturing technics that fit 3d printing nicely. I ended up buying way too many parts that I could have printed myself, or going with connection methods (with classic blots...

Re: The dark art of diamond sharpening
Cheers for this thread, really interesting read ! I was thinking what would be the most appropriate regular machining gear that could be adapted for this use ? Surely the cheap diamond polishing machines available on aliexpress are far from suitable for this work ? Would adapting a lathe spindle hor...

Re: Stereo Cutting Head - based on Grooveguys design
That last head looks really nice ! They look indeed like the drivers used initially by "the farmer". My bet is that most of the improvements will come from changing the springs more than getting more clearance. You have big margins of improvement to reduce the weight of moving parts here. Building a...

Re: Stereo Cutting Head - based on Grooveguys design
I can't edit my last message, I'll do it here : "My take on this head that I also built is that the distorsions (not resonnances) come from the drivers not being adapted to this job. I had decent results at low levels, but when getting louder there was a lot of distortion." Thanks for the heads up g...

Re: Stereo Cutting Head - based on Grooveguys design
Really nice build estrada ! That torque tube and v spring looks really nicely crafted. My take on this head that I also built is that the resonnances come from the drivers not being adapted to this job. I had decent results at low levels, but when getting louder there was a lot of distortion. I took...

Re: G.C.M.R Record Lathe
Congrats, really nice build ! Which of those cutting heads is the final one ? The one on the right ? It sounds really good ! "I used an 8mm threaded rod and then found out about ball lead screws and bought a 16mm version and redesigned for it (definitely a major upgrade here)" How is that ? Did you ...

Is that vacuum platter from myshank ? I can't find it on their website. Would it fit on a Numark TT500 or Stanton ST-150 ?

Re: Vacuum Platter on VR issue
I've had similar issues. They seem to be weight related. It makes regular patterns on the record, and the groove width changes (and the cutting head vibrantes). They pitch of the playback audio changes aswell. They happen more often at the end of the record. I thought they were alignement issues but...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Cheers for the info about the pulley and belt. I've had a really hard time sourcing pulleys and belts that don't have teeth. In europe I can only find nice U shaped or band pulleys on professionnal websites that only sell to companies. I remember Knop used multiple rubber bands as belts, it's less n...

Thanks a lot ! Sadly it's not showing up in my Ableton 12. I've had quite a few vsts not showing up so it's probably on my end, but just letting you know. It shows up in audacity though.

Re: Stylus Heating for Presto K8
tbh yes from my experience heating the disc results in absolute crap results. heating the needle itself - fucking gold. literally we've got arguably better results than pressed records. YMMV. I have a modified presto 6n with a TKV cutter head and a regular MyShank diamond needle, if that's worth an...

Re: stylus heating question (plastic)
I have a silly question regarding heating, did anyone find that it helps with flutter ? If we follow the "hot knife through butter" logic, it would help a bit to reduce the horizontal force of the diamond on the record I imagine. Also, by applying heating, does the groove depth change (when applying...

Re: The farmer and his plow - When I set out to build a record cutter
The whole lathe looks phenomenal on that last pic ! What's the magnification on that microscope ? I'm impressed that you can see grooves that clearly without additionnal light. I've tried different cheap digital microscope with decent but far from optimal results (just enough to measure the groove d...
