Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Also, did someone, other that David finished the entire project? How are the results compared to David's video from YouTube? Also, it would be useful if you can provide some samples recorded from lathe vinyl. Best regards, Luci Hi there. Yes, I've built this lathe as close as humanly possible to Da...

Re: Level Meter & HF Limiting
It is possible to use a limiter after the EQ if you want to catch the odd stray peak, but ideally the audio shouldn’t have anything too pokey which should always be accounted for in mastering. I suppose it all depends on your experience with mastering audio, which is a key part of lathe cutting. If...

Re: Level Meter & HF Limiting
Sounds good. I wasn't sure if the HF limiting was to help control the extreme custom EQ or not. It sounds like we're wanting to limit the high frequencies on the original prepped master (pre custom EQ) so it's responding to the song in its original state. I got my meter labeled after calibrating wit...

Re: Level Meter & HF Limiting
In my experiment setup I take the signal from the head transducers and introduce it to the vectorscope, I do this because the experimental heads that I make have different impedance. In my opinion, the best measuring device is an oscilloscope or an analog vectorscope with a memory tube, because the...

Re: Level Meter & HF Limiting
I also meant to ask if you apply your HF limiting before or after your custom/extreme EQ. I imagine it would be less subtle but more effective after the custom EQ has has already been applied.

Re: Level Meter & HF Limiting
That makes sense. I figured I'd need to re-calibrate though if the custom EQ wasn't done at the proper levels in the past, but maybe not? Do you have a particular cutting level you try to achieve? I get that I'm embossing vs cutting and all that... but curious what you aim to cut at before diminishi...

Re: Level Meter & HF Limiting
Thanks for the quick reply spinnertownblanks ! The ART DJ Pre II was just going to be used for playback rather than the built-in line-outs to have a bit more control. I figured the meter needed to be from the output of the interface prior to hitting the cutterhead... but I guess if that's the case, ...

Level Meter & HF Limiting
Hey guys, I've been having a blast with my pentlandsound lockdown lathe (https://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=9187) paired with spinnertownblanks 's Calibration method (https://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10321). I had a bit of a 2-parter question here as I work to constantly...

Re: Audio drop-out at beginning of cut!? (Audio Included)
Thanks for the info Mark. I tried a different PC and the issue would not occur so I've at least isolated the issue. Good to know it's nothing to do with the amp/cutterhead or anything in the analog realm really. Could be something strange with the VM accessing external hardware in this particular ca...

Re: Audio drop-out at beginning of cut!? (Audio Included)
Hey Mark, Thanks for the quick response. I didn't see them flash at the time of the dropout but it appears to be happening before cutting when previewing the prepped tracks with the headphone out of the interface. I'm going to try a PC laptop with the same interface and see if it still happens. If i...

Re: Audio drop-out at beginning of cut!? (Audio Included)
Holy moly... of course after posting this, I discovered something: Before when I was testing through speakers/headphones, it wasn't happening but that was using a different interface running on my mac. I'm using a virtual machine on the same mac to run windows/Vinyl Burn with it's own dedicated audi...

Audio drop-out at beginning of cut!? (Audio Included)
Hey guys, I've been playing around with Dave's Lockdown Lathe build for awhile now and love the thing. One issue I'm running into with my current client is the audio drops out for a split second at the beginning of the first track and resumes as normal after. The intro song features bagpipes which h...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Fattcamp : As far as a turntable mat goes, I've always used either 1/16-inch sheet cork, which is a bit fragile, or the 'rubberized' equivalent, also 1/16 thick, generally intended for DIY gaskets for automotive purposes. The rubberized stuff, often associated with the brand name 'Permatex,' is tou...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Thanks for the detailed info on that. Perhaps the airpot on David's design is mainly for the initial needle-drop, which it definitely will do. I perhaps assumed it's for more than just that and for constant use while embossing, but maybe pentlandsound is able to confirm/deny that. Either way, oil-fi...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Hey guys, This post is overdue, but here's my first build! A lockdown lathe in it's current state with a Stanton STR8.150 turntable for embossing. I must have lucked out with the platter on it as I don't appear to have any noticeable issues. I stayed as close as possible to David's build in every w...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Hey Guys, It's been a minute. I still haven't bounced any recent audio from my lathe here but I'll try and do so soon to let you guys know how it sounds. Hello, guys! I started assembling, the difficulty is that I can't get many of the parts from the instructions. THK linear slide, model KR2001, pit...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Thanks for the info! You guys are quick and spot on! Dave, that looks awesome! Hoping I can get those kinds of results. This is basically my upgrade from a Teenage Engineering Record Factory, which I love but am hoping to improve on sound quality and be able to cut or emboss larger media. I even ex...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Thanks grooveguy ! You have been so helpful along the way. The main reason I didn't add an audio sample is because I'm at work and have been meaning to post this for awhile! Had to take a break from everything after recent surgery too but I'm bouncing back. OF COURSE the Canada Post mail strike has ...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
I still haven't resolved my photointerrupter issue but I honestly haven't bothered for awhile now. They are wired exactly as the build notes/documentation shows too. I'm just manually stopping the motor using the transport controls within the vinyl burn software during testing. Once I'm actually emb...
