Regarding the fragility of acrylic, I don't think I'm too worried about it... since it's round, you wouldn't have to worry about it hitting a corner or anything. Plus, how often do you drop records on a hard floor? :) I will post a sample that I did a while back, I had some noise in my cut but it wa...

d - Yes, sapphire/ruby into acrylic I'm also curious, cymbalism, through your experiments did you use the same stylus? That's the only thing that scared me off is I just assumed I'd kill my stylus too quick. Also, if clear is the only thing that works, could you make a sandwich of two clear pieces a...

I've done some experiments with acrylic (plexiglass) and sapphire, and got some decent results... I could never get a totally silent groove though (didn't use stylus heat). I actually even got quotes from some companies that could supply black acrylic discs (slightly more expensive then PC). I kind ...

When it is said that the angle needs to be between 0 and 5, is that assuming that 0 degrees = cutting face perpendicular to the blank? And 5 degrees, what direction is that? Does that mean 5 degrees off the perpendicular toward the incoming blank (if that makes sense)? I've always wondered that... f...

That's a TON less noise than I get with a long shank sapphire... but I'm using junkier plates. I plan on getting some from Party City this weekend, and I'll post some results as well.

Does any one know how harsh these plates are on a playback needle?

It'd be interesting to see if they could make stylii without the polishing facets... maybe for better cutting on non-lacquer material?

What is it that you guys use for generating suction? Vacuum cleaner? I have a shop vac that I was thinking of rigging up for suction, not sure if that would be bad for it or not....

There's a party city by my house, I'll check it out in the next couple of days

piaptk, do you have any samples of your picnic plate cuts? I'm interested in hearing how much noise you get with silent grooves, so I at least have a starting point to try and acheive.
