Great photo of Doug Sax/Mastering Lab Scully lathe
I just found a record yesterday at a garage sale, "The Missing Linc--Lincoln Mayorga Recorded Live From The Studio To The Master Disc." When I flipped the album cover over, wow--a full 12-inch sized color photo of the Doug and Sherwood Sax/Mastering Lab Scully Lathe! Absolutely beautiful. I thought ...

Here's a bit of super-obscure lathe history....
I was looking through a vintage Cinema Engineering catalog from around 1950-1951, and saw this amazing mechanical EQ they used to make to compensate for the high end loss as the groove gets closer to the center. As near as I can tell, this EQ had a spring connected to a string that actually turned u...

Cool microscopic video of a stylus tracking a groove...
Maybe some of you have seen this bit of internet "click bait" that's going around today. Pretty cool to see a needle plowing through a groove, even at 1/400th the actual speed.

Re: Frank Sinatra's Palm Springs lathe
Good point! They referenced a Rek O Kut lathe in the article, and I thought that perhaps the turntable in question was just missing it's overhead carriage. But you're right, it might just be a Rek O Kut transcription turntable, not sure....

For those following this thread, I was able to hook up with Ralph and Bob in Minneapolis and see their Scully 501 in action. Here's a short video, enjoy!

Re: Restoring a Scully 501 lathe-anybody have literature/man
Virtalahde--
Kiitos! (Been to Finland many times)
I DO need a relay box, and a microscope w/stand, light w/stand, turntable attachment, carriage stop arm, and a few little doo dads.
If you can, send me a PM with a list of what extra parts you have, I appreciate it!

Thanks, EJ! I have Len helping me as well. I'm sure I will have several questions for all the current Scully owners/users once I get a little further along on the project!

Vintage 1954 photos of Scully lathes in action
Found these two photos in the 1954 Fawcett "Hi Fi Manual." One is credited to NBC, one to Columbia/CBS. Looks like both of them were using Scully 501 with fixed pitch at the time, pretty standard for mid-1950's. Dr. Peter Goldmark--"the man who perfected the 33 1/3 RPM long playing album." --WOW-- D...

Re: Anybody know what happened to "Audadvnc" aka Robert Hugh
Greg-- Thanks! I actually talked to Ralph at Atma-Sphere this morning after doing some online detective work. he said Robert has been so busy with other things for the last year the lacquer cutting and lathe forum have gone by the wayside. But I hope to visit their cutting room and see the lathe whi...

Re: Finebilt presses book
Flozki-- I just saw your post about dumpster diving in back of Korelich Manufacturing in Hollywood. Argh! I used to do record labels with Pete Korelich back in the 1990s and he had an impressive setup of letterpress machines that he printed labels on, it was from the 1930's or 1940's and hadn't chan...

Re: Restoring a Scully 501 lathe-anybody have literature/man
Smithadamm, thanks! Next time I drive through Ohio I definitely want to visit Mr. Hull at Musicol. Anybody else know of anybody actually using Scully 501's today? Besides Robert Hughes in Minneapolis and Mr. Hull at Musicol, I'm not sure how many 501's are still in existence, especially with the fix...

Anybody know what happened to "Audadvnc" aka Robert Hughes?
Hi all-- I'm going to Minneapolis this weekend and I would love to try and visit Robert Hughes, aka "audadvnc" on this list, but he doesn't seem to be an active member on the forum anymore and I can't find any contact information for him. He posted a bunch of photos to the forum of his Scully 501 la...

Re: Restoring a Scully 501 lathe-anybody have literature/man
IMG_3261.JPG Hello all-- I've had a long break since I first posted about my Scully lathe project. Been going through an 18-month divorce but finally back to concentrating on the Scully 501 restoration. I have visited Len Horowitz at HRS Sound here in LA and he let me copy some invaluable Scully li...

Re: Ink used on the labels of phonograph records
Lewis-- Cool. Yes I saw it was an old post but it was one I could actually answer and not sound like an idiot, ha ha.... The guy I used to use never used gold ink but he used silver ink a lot, and it always looked great--very shiny, metallic, really stood out. I have a really dim memory of him sayin...

Re: Ink used on the labels of phonograph records
Lewis, Deke Dickerson here. I can answer your question about record labels. I did a lot of research back in the 90's and found out that old (proper looking) record labels were done with letterpress, not offset, printing. There was one old guy in Hollywood named Pete Korelich who at one time had a fu...
