Re: Microscope Light Possibilities??
Soulbear— So funny you’d post this, because since my last post I’ve been working on the same idea. Here’s what I came up with, I used some old microphone stand clips to make the clip and an LED flashlight to clip in it. The LED is too bright, honestly, but for the first time in my lathe restoration ...

Re: Anybody have a vintage clip-on microscope light for sale
Thanks for the reply! I'm thinking if I can't find a vintage light, I'll have to rig up something for functionality. But yeah, holding out for something with the same vintage look...
This little light is interesting, though, and it's certainly worth checking out as a possibility! Thank you.

Anybody have a vintage clip-on microscope light for sale?
I'm looking for a microscope light like the one pictured below. This is for the microscope on my Scully, though I've been told that this style actually comes from a Presto recorder. I have the microscope and the base, just need the light. I have already contacted Len and Jacob Horowitz and also Mike...

Any Scully owners/cutters on the west coast of Florida?
Hey there Lathe Trolls-- I'm going to have a few extra days on the west coast of Florida next week, and wondering if there are any Scully owners/cutters within a few hours of Tampa and Orlando. I've been going around taking tons of photos of all the Scully lathes I can find in my travels. Just wonde...

Re: Anybody else using a Fairchild Thermo Stylus? Need phot
Thanks Mark! Much appreciated. This is basically what I thought as well, I just didn't want to hook it up to AC unless I was sure. But I think I can safely hook it up the way you've described, and check it along the way to figure out if there are any defective items. My guess is that if they clipped...

Anybody else using a Fairchild Thermo Stylus? Need photo
If anyone else on the forum is using a Fairchild Thermo Stylus, I would really appreciate an underside photo of a functioning unit. I bought one off of eBay a couple years ago and just now getting to the point of needing to get it up and running. I took the back off for the first time and discovered...

Thanks Anavein!
Progress has been quite slow but I think sometime this year it'll be cutting discs. Made some big steps in the last 6 months, now it's all coming together.

Any Scully folks recognize this oddball tonearm mount?
Hello all-- I recently (finally) got a microscrope stand for my Scully project, and that's when I realized that these odd bits I scored last year were part of a tonearm mount that was designed to fit on the 1" chrome pipe of a Scully microscope stand. However, I can't quite figure out how it is desi...

Re: Vacuums for chip-sucking
Paul at Aardvark Mastering in Denver hipped me to using player piano vacuum pumps for chip sucking. They are kind of perfect--low noise, not too much vacuum, and you can get models with adjustable motor speed to suit your taste. They are a few hundred bucks but for me it seemed like a good way to ju...

Re: Restoring a Scully 501 lathe-anybody have literature/man
Thanks for asking! The restoration is crawling along, slowly but surely. I had a year's delay because the chromer chromed a couple of the moving parts assemblies in place. I thought I was screwed, but eventually found a hot rod machinist buddy that was able to free the parts and get them all working...

Scully Acoustic Wax Lathe on "American Epic" TV Show
I'm surprised and a little shocked that nobody here has mentioned the PBS recording lathe-meets-rockstars documentary "American Epic." Anybody here catch the episode last night?

Anybody have Scully bathtub drive parts?
Hello there-- I'm deep in the restoration of my Scully lathe, it's turning into a long, long project.... When I bought my lathe it came with the ancient Westrex drive unit, that was not operational and only 33/78 speeds. Recently I bought a "project" bathtub drive unit and an original Scully pipe st...

Re: Synchronous AC motor for leadscrew
I saw a 1940's Scully lathe in action in Minneapolis where they had adapted the leadscrew to be controlled by a variable servo motor. It worked quite well. The way the Scullys are designed originally, the leadscrew belt ran off the turntable shaft, which creates more drag on the turntable shaft and ...

Re: Questions about scully lathes
Here's Lawrence J Scully's patent (submitted 1958) explaining the variable-pitch system. He quotes 2 seconds lead time in the patent description, but 1.8 seconds is probably more accurate. https://www.google.com/patents/US2948783?dq=ininventor:Lawrence+ininventor:Scully&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CB4Q6AEwAGoVC...

Re: Restoring a Scully 501 lathe-anybody have literature/man
The Scully lathe restoration crawls along. I just got back my metal parts from polishing and chroming. The stack of little plastic baggies you see in this photo are all the little chrome bits, with their chromed screws and washers and such. Now it's up to Len Horowitz and myself to get it assembled ...
