Re: Project "Groove Scribe"- A DYI stereo 45/45 head.
For better high frequency response, try slowing the source track from 1 (normal 45 equivalent) to 0.67 (33.3 equivalent) and playback at 45rpm. That is one thing I learned from another lather on here. I suppose if possible to get even better highs for 33.3rpm one could do the same to the source trac...

Re: You wanna innovate? Make a good hi torque turntable
An unsaid source of torque is treadmill motors. They are powered by 85 - 135 vDC and have torque for days ( 1-3.5hp around 2000rpm ). Almost all of them are brush & commuter requiring extreme weight for inertial dampening. I have one I was going to use as a DC generator (they are great for doing tha...

Re: Sillitoe Lathes
For enough audio level, I use a very powerful automobile audio amplifier powered by a homemade 100 amp 12 volt power supply. The transformer is a modified high voltage microwave transformer (the HV secondary was removed and rewound using 10 gauge conductor with the output going to a 100 amp bridge r...

Audio For Lathe Recording
Playground Blade Runner http://soundcloud.com/djmikiria/playground-blade-runner is a WAV mix of French duo Air & a Vangelis track from the movie Blade Runner. I would only use WAV instead of mp3 to keep the recording chain with fewest links for quality sake. Opinion input is welcome. sincerely, Mik...

Re: DIY heated stylus
I tried using a ceramic glue gun heating element chip to assist in cutting during recording & found it was quite difficult to get a proper temp. All that did for me was make the CD bubble and unplayable. I forgot where I got the idea from, but it was in a winter and the environment the lathe was in ...

Re: Anyone ever cut into a GLASS disc? (dont laugh too hard)
I have researched this much and I always assumed the glass would need to be heated to approx. 900*F to soften it (dangerous), but it never occurred to me to do it this way. Allowing a chemical (acid) to create the depth of groove needed. I also asked the very same question here on the forum LOL. Thi...

Glass and Crystal Records
I have been exhaustively researching the concept of creating glass records with my lathe. They only existed at the very birth of the medium but were quickly phased out. I ask about this due to the substance (glass) being far more resistant to scratches unlike vinyl and poly-carbonate. Any advice wou...

Re: Driver Selection
Yes it does help thank you. I already assumed that the specs for a speaker would NOT be the same if used as a head driver. As for stiffness in the embossing armature, that is another variable I will now add to construction LOL.
Sincerely,
Mikiness

Driver Selection
I want to completely retool my lathe arm (stereo). For the purpose of embossing, would tweeters make better speakers for this application more than the small full range speakers I have on there now?
Any suggestions will be considered and thank you muches.

Steel Stylus on Polycarbonate: What Kind Of Oil
What kind of oil should be used to prevent screeching? The angle is really sharp (22*) in the direction of rotation. Weight is barely enough to create a groove.
I was thinking fish oil, something thin...help please.

Too Much Stereo
I have recently changed my cutter head arm assembly and am using new tiny tweeters as my mechanical source to move the stylus. I also use a surgical steal razor broken at exactly 45* (left/right). The problem arises on playback. There is too much stereo and I can not hear vocals over music. Can anyo...

An Easy RIAA Mono Phono Preamp Schematic
Ok, i finally built my own phono preamp with 2 op amps stated to have a THD of .008 which from what I can tell is ultra quiet. It is not required for embossing but for accurate playback so I have proper reference. I can send the schematic if needed for those that are "DIY" like me. God this lathe bu...

Re: how-to emboss
I have discovered different styli substances give better results at different angles. I have experimented with surgical steel, heated sapphire, glass, and even titanium. 22* angle of attack in the direction of rotation with a steel stylus shaped 90* (L/R 45*) works overall best. Less highs but longe...

Re: Half Speed Mastering Demo
Whatever anyone says about halfspeed, it should be noted that I "emboss" at .07 speed instead of 1.0 (the difference between 45 and 33) so the playback high end frequency response is better as the stylus has a better chance of indenting those high frequencies and it can more accurately be reproduced...

Re: how-to emboss
Discovered this by accident David. I found the angle shape of the emboss tip had to be changed due to the angle of attack because it created a wider groove than expected making for some very odd sounding stereo LOL. The end result "looks" like a 90* groove being 45 by 45 to the surface. Please forgi...

Re: New to record cutting, exploring possible meterials
Question: Anyone know why I am getting surface noise after changing my surgical steel razor stylus? Nothing has been altered (other than CDR brand), it is even from the same lot number of razors that until now were impressively quiet. I am increasing the angle to almost level with the disc surface (...
