Dig around the forum, all of that has been covered countless times before on here. As to the alternative materials to cut, others have far more experience than I do with non-lacquer blanks. I think people have had good success with certain plastic plates. As to the trick with the speeds, if you thi...

Hi, I have owned 2 of these in the past. I am confused because you used the term "console". The link you sent to the auction just shows a combination playback changer/cutter made by General industries for Wilcox Gay. This certainly came from a console, but is just the mechanical part without the ele...

I Hate to say it but for that money I dont think you will find anything unless you find a seller who doesn;t know what they are selling. These opportunities come up from time to time. Another trick is to canvass radio stations in regional areas who have been in\business since the 40s or 50s. Ask to...

At the end of the cut you can hear what sounds like some hum/rumble on the playback. I think that it is cut in, not from the playback table. I have both a Rek-o-kut and one of the Numark portables and I know what the noise floor sounds like on either one. Very quiet grooves as far as hiss/surface no...

site with catalog pages of disc recorders
There is a site which deals mostly with reel to reel recorders, but they have copies of pages of catalogs, which if you go back far enough have home disc cutters, for example - http://reel2reeltexas.com/cat51Allied.html (mouse over cover to see internal page) Poke around the 40s to mid 50s areas and...

Yeah, that's worth it. You will probably have to do some restoration though. It's a home unit that uses a cutter / turntable mechanism common to a lot of early 50s units made by General Industries. Others with this same deck include Bell and Meissner. A couple of tests beyond what you have tried alr...

It would stand to reason that embossing would not lend itself to recording the smallest high frequency information, as you are really just deforming material or pushing it out of the way to make the groove. The smallest features probably just "spring back" or average out to some degree rather than ...

As with all AC motors, the capactors might be an issue. When my friend's unit (that I now have) was last up and running, I know there was an issue with either start or run caps and some were replaced. But mine has a big flywheel, larger and heavier than the turntable, below the deck on it's own bear...
