Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli

JJ Golden advised me to cut a side of silence with the heat turned off & that has cleaned most of them up quite nicely. Caution when doing this , as they can wear and get hissy real quick without heat. I don't run a whole side without heat, just maybe 30 seconds then check it.... then another 20 se...

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli

Sounds like everyone else is having identical problems as me, including Apollo claiming that they are fine upon inspection (and also claiming that I am literally the only customer experiencing problems). JJ Golden advised me to cut a side of silence with the heat turned off & that has cleaned most o...

Re: Neumann Chip Jar Seal

Thanks Paul! I know my jar seal doesn't have much life in it & I've been pondering finding a replacement as well recently.

Can someone help identify this pressing issue

Got some noisy tests back, and noticed these odd moments all over. I've never seen anything like this. Looks like it has pulled the left groove wall out. It seems to be that way on a few different instances. Have you seen this before? http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/17/2dfe542cce8330c7e41b62...

Re: How to clean a sapphire?

Methelethyl ketone & pith wood will get rid of it. Just be sure not to huff too much of that

Re: 100% pure LP

Is this the old 'super vinyl'. I wasn't aware that it still existed, although I have an old Cat Stevens record that was pressed to it. It is indeed exceptionally quiet noise floor for a vinyl record.

Thanks to all that contributed. Although it wasn't a successful campaign we have a few other ideas cooking & will make sure you are all made aware of them.

Re: Cutting a hidden/alternate track - VMS80

I cut a 7" called RPM turntable football this winter. Was quite a hit as a record store day release. 5 parallel grooves on each side. Cut on a VMS 70.

Direct to Disk recording series

We at Welcome To 1979 Studios in Nashville, Tennessee are planning a direct to disk recording series this summer. We call it "Bands Banding Together." Five bands, ranging in genre, will come in to our all analog studio & cut full LP's direct to disk on our Neumann VMS-70 lathe...no digital, no tape....

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli

I finally decided to pop out my previous transco stylus. It was still cutting fine, but I felt guilty for having it on there so long. After the frustrations of throwing on 3 new horrible styli I just threw the used one back on. So it goes. Hopefully the replacements I get are better.

Re: Cutting nitemares? Am I alone?

I have done the fast/time thing several times. The sad part is there is not a thing you can do except cut it again! Ha! I haven't done this yet, but I have done the opposite where I hit time instead of fast at the end of a side. There are masters out in the world where, if you look hard enough, hav...

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli

It seems we all have a problem with styli. Maybe the answer is having a more rigorous QC setup, and charging more for them. I'd gladly pay more for styli & have them be good quality. I end up having to buy 2 or 3 before getting a good one anyways.

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli

They are replacing my boxes of transcos with a different batch number. If these aren't any better I may have to switch. About 6 months ago I moved to transcos because of problems with apollos. So it goes.

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli

When we have issues, we should post lot numbers also. I switched to Adamant last summer. The Transco styli were a real pain to work with. I did get a bad Adamant stylus yesterday. Center line off center, sounded awful. They will not credit me until it gets sent to Japan for analysis. That bums me o...

Re: Transco Lacquers and Styli

Got a box of transco 14" disks T-14010. The top 6 a lacquers on the box are all ruined with the same problem. I'm assuming the rest are bad as well. The lacquer seems to be uneven all over the place. When I cut on them my grooves get much deeper in weird splotchy places on the disk. Kinda looks like...

Re: Humidifier in cutting room?

The cold air being pumped in from outside has more moisture than the dry air coming from the heater. And since I'm not having chip issues anymore, I'm going to stick with it.

Re: Humidifier in cutting room?

I had a similar issue, even though we aren't having Cleveland weather in Nashville, it has been sub-20° here. Ended up running the AC for a bit (dedicated unit in my room) and it cleared up the issue. I fought the chip for awhile. I even changed the stylus thinking that it had something to do with i...

Re: adjusting PS66 Programmer // VMS70

I have seen two different specs for alignment of the SV cards. The one in the VMS 66 manual and there was an update in the mid 70s. Basically there needs to be a 2:1 ratio between the two cards. The two settings I have seen are 1.9v to 3.8 and 2.5 to 5. The 2.5 to 5 setup being the more modern of t...
