Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Hi, The acoustic response graphs have little meaning in this application. You are not trying to move air via a diaphragm. What you care about are the power handling limits, moving mass of the voice coil, and the BL specs. Taken together, they predict how efficient the driver will be at moving the st...

Re: The dark art of diamond sharpening
Hi, Sapphire what I was working with at the time and it did grind very quickly. I was surprised at the times you were quoting with diamonds. Also my lapping setup was much cruder than yours. I think you did a very nice job getting that together. I'll say on top of this thread and I just might take t...

Re: The dark art of diamond sharpening
Hi Estrada, This is awesome work! Some time ago, I've played with making carbide and sapphire cutting styli with a home made template faceter with some limited success. Template faceting is very inexpensive, but not very precise. I stopped working on this long ago and have been embossing ever since,...

Re: Crafting a DIY Lathe Recorder from Scratch HELPP
Hello everyone I am building a vinyl lathe recorder (Embossing) from scratch as a diy project, and although I have gathered quite a bit of information, I still have several questions. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions regarding the following points: Topic 1: Design and Parameters of Need...

Re: New: Phonocut Desktop Disc Cutter
Hi, I'm not sure I understand what you are claiming. If you made a deal with the Phoncut people outside of Kickstarter, then I think you might have a valid case. That would depend on any contract you signed. If you were a Kickstarter backer, then any refund would be at the discretion of the project ...

Re: IRIAA VST3 Plugin PC Only
Thanks for sharing, but my program does not open this file. I use Audacity for half speed, but this program distorts something because if I input the signal for rendering at 50% lower speed, it changes the frequency from, for example, 1kHz to 500Hz, i.e. one octave down and it seems to be ok, but u...

Re: IRIAA VST3 Plugin PC Only
Hi,
For completeness, here is the playback RIAA plugin. To use it, you would need to have a phono preamp that is flat (no RIAA in the signal path) and the pickup would need to be a magnetic type (velocity responding).

IRIAA VST3 Plugin PC Only
Hi, Some years ago, I developed a 32 bit VST2 PC only IRIAA plugin and made it available here. In that time, the VST standard moved from 32 to 64 bit and from VST2 to VST3. I decided to update the plugin to modern standards and also improved it by adding 2X oversampling and an option for half speed ...

Re: Caruso parametric curve
Hi, Yes, you would like the feedback coils to be as close as possible to the stylus, since that is the motion you are trying to control. That will add some more control problems that need attention since you will now have any mechanical effects of the stylus and shank in the groove. One other thing ...

Re: Pressing Plant Actual Starting Cost
Hi, I'm curious if you are in a hobby mode if you have looked into the Cook Microfusion process for pressing? No boiler or steam needed and very much lower pressures as compared to the standard approach. I've played with the process on a very low budget on and off over the years with some success su...

Re: Having trouble getting the 'Highs'
Hi, You probably need more boost. A second EQ might do the trick. You could need as much as +35db of boost at the frequency extreme to get results. However, you will very likely need more amplifier power to be able to avoid clipping with this much boost. How much power are you using? I would go with...

Re: There are no dumb questions
Hi, I don't think you have to get that radical with your filtering. The moving iron heads and small on-board power amp will keep you out of trouble. If you ever decide to drive the head with a high powered external amp to push the high frequency limits of the head, then you will want to be more care...

Re: Hacking The Teenage Engineering PO-80
Hi, I'll be interested to see how that works out. A couple of things to look at. The first task would be to prevent the EM field of the driver from coupling into the piezo. They are very high impedance devices and will need to be mounted close to the stylus to measure the movement. This could be an ...

Re: The farmer and his plow - When I set out to build a record cutter
Hi Thomas, Thanks for the explanation. 700X seems optimistic. How is that determined? From what I can see there are about ten grooves on the screen at a spacing of about 200 lpi. So you see about .05" of distance. If the screen is 10" diagonal, then I calculate about 200X. Is there any digital zoom ...

Re: The farmer and his plow - When I set out to build a record cutter
Hi Thomas, Looks pretty good. The cost of the scope is reasonable. What is the optical magnification you are running at here? What is the groove LPI we are seeing? Does the software that comes with the scope allow for calibration and measurements? Any ability to create a custom video overlay? Mark

Re: Hacking The Teenage Engineering PO-80
Happy Holidays, I finally had some time to package up the details of my NEMA 14 stepper retrofit for the PO-80/Gakken. This is not for the novice as there are several things that will need to be fabricated and purchased. I put everything into a zip file which is attached. My setup uses a custom desi...

Re: Reusing old records
Hi, The big issues would be to obtain a mirror smooth and flat surface after your pressing operation. Also cutting PVC is not easily done. The typical blank cut with a diamond is PETG or maybe Polycarb for embossing. But, it would be fun to give it a try. If you have at it and get results, post them...
