Re: Magic fluids for home cutters (DuoTone)

No idea, but wow. Very interesting. I can't even find a reference to it on the net. I bought a Phonocord console 3 years ago and there was a full bottle of the pre cutting lubricant in it. The back label of the bottle had an ad with something like "Be sure to use DuoTone recording hardener to make ...

Re: Self Repair of the cutting head

Answering one of the initial questions. If you are going for 4 ohms impedance, a DC meter reading should be at least 2.7 ohms.

Magic fluids for home cutters (DuoTone)

Way back in the day (late 1940's through the 50's) a company called DuoTone offered bottles of liquids made for home acetate record cutting. One was a pre recording solution that was supposed to lubricate the disc for a quieter cut. The other was a "hardener" that supposedly hardened the disc so you...

Re: Welcome, Newbies! Say Hi in this thread!

HI ! Wanted to say hello. Just got the urge to start cutting again. Used to do this back in the mid 60's (oh yeah. I'm that old). Now that I'm in my mid 60's I thought it would be fun to try it again. I actually used to get acetate blanks from the Allied Radio catalog when I was a kid. Now I'm retir...

Hate to keep flogging a dead horse but ... I went on the net, bought a cheap (under 20 bucks) variable DC power supply kit, added a small cooling fan on the heatsink, and presto ! (no brand name identity implied) found the voltage that worked with my nichrome wire (80 ohms per foot). I added a vinta...

Driving a crystal head

Crystal heads are pretty efficient. They only need a few watts (under 10) to drive them. The important thing is to match the impeadance. I've only used magnetic heads and don't know what that impeadance is. Gib will know, he know everything. Impeadance matching is pretty easy, you just need to find ...

Crystal heads

It is almost a given that all three of your heads are bad. The Rochell salts that are in old crystal heads decompose with time. They can easily be rebuilt.

Thanx for the relplies. I read the thread. I have a magnetic head that Gib is rewinding for me. I was just wondering if someone had come up with a formula for how much voltage is needed for any particular wire. The wire I have right now is 80 ohms per foot. I was wondering if the wire you guys used ...

Nichrome wire heater

I think I read a post here about a homemade stylus heater. I see how you could do a few wraps of nichrome and feed it a low voltage. What type of wire did you use (how many ohms per foot) and how much voltage did you give it (1,2,3 volts dc ... more ?). I want to heat the stylus on my Magnificent Ra...
