Strange Formats and their Various Connections

As requested - the various references to all these strange audio and video formats from here: http://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=6720 have been moved to this thread in the Playback department. Maybe become a Sticky sometime. For the unfamiliar - We left off over there talking about tryi...

Re: Project: - Recoating Alunimum Core from Acetates

Feel free. But put descriptions before the links if you intend for it to be a Sticky in the Archiving and Restoration forum so if hyperlinks suffer from Link Rot later on - people can still Google the various things we discuss.

Re: Project: - Recoating Alunimum Core from Acetates

And then don't forget how desperate people can get trying for a hit record that they have to steal off the BBC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6RjuRvmass (slide over to 4:54) like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFfy0dMKIi8 as well as a certain X rated rapper who died of AIDS in 1995.

Ooh-Ooh Child things ain't gonna get no easier cuz then you get into trying to play paper records printed in a book with no grooves to follow https://mediapreservation.wordpress.com/2012/06/20/extracting-audio-from-pictures...

Re: What does a mother sound like?

You made a stamper. You need a saddle stylus to play that.
The people who use the Australian clear solution that does the same thing report decent results when applied to a stamper instead of a pressing.

Re: Project: - Recoating Alunimum Core from Acetates

Very Nice. For the unfamiliar - those fibre-based and colored ``lacquers'' were custom printed for dime stores drugstores and who knows how many other small merchants all across the U.S. Most common are the Capitol series but AFAIK they came in about a dozen colors (in addition to the orange red and...

Re: World's Fastest Record by My45

I have one from the 70's recorded at 105 RPM which is what you get for 78 when your 33 is geared up for 45. As the story goes - after trying out several other mastering plants in L.A. - some people were bringing their tapes in one Friday night to a friend who worked at Mattel Mastering (talking doll...

A Ph. D. in Obscure Media Studies

Stanford wants me to do it and a small handful of guys on here and the various other media related boards I belong to - all of whom have at one point or another come to me with some type of media or other and asked ``what is this and how do you use i?'' - have kind of kept after me to either do some...

Craziest musical instrument on the planet.

Posted this under Handcrankers as well but posted it here for a wider audience. Craziest musical instrument on the planet. WARNING: SONG IS VERY CATCHY. IT WILL STICK IN YOUR EAR. Plays a song programmed by Legos on a caterpillar track and executed by pinballs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvUU8j...

Re: Is this truly innovative or just stupid?

I know people have tried ``printing'' vertically, but there was 2 problems: 1. the vertical component could not exist in the same plane as the lateral component precluding stereo and 2. the vertical component required several passes to build it up. I'm sure the laser-printer and 3D printer guys coul...

Hibernating through Holidays.

Anybody else do it? For safety reasons to stay off the roads or any other reason? I'm reminded once again why I've done it for 25 years (vicariously through my sisters and their kids and grandkids). Due to the various apps and websites around that tell people where the best and most Halloween candy ...

Sure it is. It's called `the overdub track to The Chipmunks, the Birds and Mice (A Dream is A Wish your Heart Makes) from Motley Crue or the Munchkins from The Wizard of Oz.

Re: Half Speed Mastering

It's either Sooooooo Expensive to get one of the rack-mount processers or Soooooo Time Consuming to build it yourself with only marginal results that it's better to take the file you have now to any one of a handful of Half-Speed-Mastering houses that are still left (Nautilus, MFSL, CBS Halfspeed et...

Re: Half Speed Mastering

Digital speed reduction - and down to 50%? Ugh. Artifact City. And digital downrezzing? Equally bad. You'd be better off bumping to 15 or even 30 IPS quarter-inch (or even the new JRF Magnetics 2-track half-inch) analog - adjusting your NAB curve (or recording at 30 since there's no curve to adjust)...

Don't think you could cut on chocolate very well anymore than polystyrene edibility and playability notwithstanding.

But everybody by NOW I hope has seen:

Plenty of stampers or lacquer molds around though.
