Re: Need help with acoustic recording soundbox

Oh, man, those pictures are exactly the information I've been searching for for ages! This looks very much like a Berliner recorder, like Emoritt said. You lucky so-and-so... :P As to recording blanks, I've done research on Berliner's disc recording process, using acid and zinc discs. I've had promi...

Re: List of Movies with a cutting lathe

Here's a clip from the Jimmy Durante film "Two Sisters From Boston", depicting Lauritz Melchior making an acoustic recording. The lathe makes a quick appearance at 1:43:
The vignette at the end is priceless.

Powerstrip brought up this idea in an Experimenter's thread a while back:

Re: Feed Screw Project (Presto 6N, 8N)

Thanks, Steve. This is good information we're getting out of this project in the long run - trying and testing that upper limit of the basic 6N design.

Once again, it seems I am in the presence of equipment porn.

That console is a beaut. It's a dream of mine to piece together an analogue studio from roughly that era. Nice find.

If I don't get to rebuilding my 1D coils before that, I'll gladly throw some cash your way for a new pair.
Now to figure out the weird shape of the 5C coil...

Re: WTB: Stereo Multi Cassette Duplicator

Bingo, Greg. There are factions of the hipster crowd clanging for cassette releases simply because of the possible deficiencies. The world truly does take all types.

Edison DD recording platter on eBay? - curiosity

Seller pulled this from the Edison plant in West Orange. Threaded spindle makes it likely this was somehow used in recording or dubbing of discs.

Re: Starting up a Label

Hi Nico, and welcome! Starting a small music label and jumping right in with cutting is quite a leap. Often you'll find that the majority of indie labels that offer physical records have digital releases as their bread-and-butter, so to speak. Many don't actually cut the discs themselves, either, ev...

Re: WTB Lathe - Seeking Advice and Knowledge

Welcome, AJ! Glad to see you have a firm grasp of the possible pitfalls and money traps associated with this calling. As to Presto vs Rek-o-kut, I can personally only speak for the merits of some of the Presto models. I've worked with three so far: K-style units and a 6N. The K models are solidly bu...
