Re: Neumann AM32 with Upgrades

Hubba hubba. AM32 and an SX45, together. (Would love to be able to zoom in on those pictures.) Fwiw, was just checking out an old edition of Radio-Electronics from March of 1964 (Vol. XXXV No.3), which happens to have on the cover master-cutter Claude Rie, using a Neumann lathe with SX-45 stereo cut...

Might try messaging EmAtChapterV - who left the post with instructions, here, that you might be referring to. https://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?t=4111&start=20 Good luck calibrating that machine. Check everything, and then recheck. Plus remember, it's Hammer Time (you've got to pray, jus...

Re: True 78 cut on Lacquer master

If I were to cut the lacquers, I'd use an arbitrary function generator to create the reference clock signal for the turntable servo (and another for feed compensation), while cutting fixed-pitch, which maxes at 100 LPI on my machine, so that it can cut at full speed (since the servo's crystal's mast...

Re: True 78 cut on Lacquer master

Whilst 300 Hz is a reasonable approximation for many a shellac's bass-turn-over- F, 200 - 500 cps includes most of the variety of the turn-over frequencies that were used on electric-era 78s, and many were right around 375 cps (i.e., 424 µs (= 375 cps), rather than 530 µs (= 300 cps)), according to ...

Re: True 78 cut on Lacquer master

...the treble pre-emphasis time-constant used for playback at 78 would also have to be multiplied by 0.57 for cutting at 45. ...agree that the record-eq time-constant needs to be a bigger number (ergo, divide previous tau by 0.57 for a lower center frequency) if the cut is done at a fraction of the...

Re: True 78 cut on Lacquer master

It's not just saying 'use a bit of EQ', Dub Studio. Arguably most 78 records were cut with a 300-ish-Hz high-bass turn-over frequency, and an 11 - to - 15 -dB low bass cut around 50 Hz. While there was some variety to the bass turn-over frequency used for wax mastering - the variety was relatively c...

Re: True 78 cut on Lacquer master

Fractional speed cutting ideally would include a customized recording network with adjusted time constants for proper decoding on playback at speed. 1/2-speed-capable cutting amps with built-in RIAA, por ejemplo. have this extra feature.

Oblivious to...? Have you tried contacting Hamilton Records, in Argentina? Re: Fairchild 740 Belts

As you may know already, the circumference of a belt doesn't affect the speed - but it will affect the removal and replacement ability, given whatever positioning constraints are applied by the motor mount and/or for æsthetics, if the position of the works is at all visible. I'm almost gladdened to ...

Re: Fairchild 740 Belts

They look pretty darned thick. I use belts for my lathe platters, but they're only 3.0 mils thick. so my OEM may not be helpful if you need them thick. The thickness (aka 'ply') is definitely part of the gear-ratio of the platter and motor pulley system. I could not use a 3.5 mils thick belt, for ex...

Don't you just hate it when you start a thread about a conspiracy theory, and someone comes along and kills it with some cold hard facts like this. Dear Double-plus UnCool, So, what are your 'cold, hard facts' about the unsolved murder, on the 37th day of 1989 A. D., of the man whose Christian name...

Btw, i noticed in the Vinyl Factory's Cutting Edge article from 4 years ago that you mentioned Neumann's last lathe being sold in 1989 - the year of Tubby's unsolved murder. https://thevinylfacto...

Re: Over-cutting anyone done any?

You may have encountered this concept in your study, already, but it may be worth mentioning in your paper that, with the standard, Micropoint-style lacquer-cutting stylus, having the enormous 40-degree back angle, when we get to the end of the side, due to the ever- slowing land speed at reduced di...

Re: VR T-560 Back Angle Contradictions

Indeed, the Ortofon cutting head is held at the target vertical cutting angle - plus an additional 5 degrees for lacquer-springback compensation and another 5 degrees for stylus-holder-flexion compensation - so, for lacquer cutting, a 25-degree VCA would create groove modulation that can be nicely p...

Re: In need of tips, advice and suggestions for pressing records

A possible cause of the mis-connection being made (conceptually) between 'non-fill' and 'stitching' might be as simple as the grammatical difference between 'non-filling' and 'un-filling'. As mentioned, because some of the 'material' ends up on the stamper when one sees 'stitching' in the pile, it m...

Re: modding a Vanrock/Atom to cut 5" discs

I read that Emil Berliner's first gramophone records were 5" diameter. But they were intended as a child's toy, since the sound quality at disk radii less than 3 inches is rather compromised. As for the mod - since it would still be kewl to emboss on 5" disks - move the mount 1.0" to cut at 5.0" ins...
