The eq is just really the fabfilter eq match function recorded white noise vs true white noise, a hpf at 17khz and lpf at 30

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Got the cutterhead installed and did some first test cuts. Still got a lot of resonance peaks. Anyone who can tell me what the dip and peak at 4Khz could be??? knoprec1 response32.png But when EQ ed it sounds ok, here's a clip, the needle is chipped hence a lot of bg noise. https://clyp.it/11bf2mco

Re: Melted Plastic On Stylus

I did the resistor mod a while ago,
At 45 it worked out fine but at 33 i had speed hunting issues. Its an easy mod and easy to undo ofcourse.

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Due to the fact I broke my 2 last needles I had a bit time to work on the cutterhead. So everything fits, V spring assembly + torque tube + set screw + stylus is down to 1,92gr Driver coils + driver surround and cone + pushrod assembly is down to 0,95gr per driver. main resonance seems to be about 1...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

An affordable hardware DSP solution looks very interesting. I wonder if the latency can get low enough to use in a studio setup as a realtime effects unit or VA synth? Did some 3D work today, Got the alu torque tube down to 0,7 gram from 1,05 gram, I hope I didn't shave too much weight. torque tube ...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

No I would like to know what variables influence what first. I will see how far it can go without feedback, and release the plans for the community and maybe build some as well for others. Would be nice to have an affordable stereo cutterhead option.

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hello everyone. Have not had much time to develop the cutterhead, but I'm now building another revision. Most of my spare time I am actually cutting records, and getting the new studio room ready. I tried to use metal inserts for the threads in the cutterhead this time. I hope this works. Added a 20...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hello everyone, Finished up the new cutterhead and got some measurements done. Had a lot of work cutting records and fighting with the suction of swarf. The suction worked pretty reliable for a while using the rietschle pump, but now the swarf seems to bowl up almost immediately under the stylus. Pe...

Re: T560 - What's your method to align a new VR diamond?

I use this model for aligning stylii:

Really happy with the purchase, I use it for groove checking and fine solder work as well.

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

For question 1: Not an expert so my logic could contain some errors. the vta should be around 15 degrees. This to my knowledge should only affect stereo information, and that is also what I percieve. Tracks with wide stereo panning do sound less good on my cutterhead. But the vertical cutting angle ...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hi, KNOP, Looks like you're making progress. Be sure to post some results recordings as you go along. One question: how are you anchoring your push rods from the drivers to this piece? I see two holes for the tubes/rods, but do figure on epoxying them in or some other means? Does this assembly simp...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hi everyone. I've been busy but the cuts are getting better. I made the most progress smoothing out the smaller high q filter points in fabfilter pro above the resonant frequency of the cutterhead. Still not happy with the noise floor however. I hope it is due to my noisy vacuum setup. Got my alu to...

Re: Rietschle VTE-8

Hey , I've bought the same pump on ebay but I have not received it yet. I'm planning to use it with a 3 phase motor controller to make it extra quiet. I don't think it will be hard to hook it up. The datasheet suggests an 10 to 12mm inner diameter tubing to connect to the pump. If you have a 3 phase...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Too bad of the high weight sifis. I'm interested too see how easy the mounting of the drivers to your pushrods will go, I assume you will have the drivers and pushrod/torque tube already installed in the cutterhead before making the connection? I made an error in the ordered print file, so I made a ...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

The other torque tubes are in alumide, which is plastics with aluminium powder or something. A bit stiffer than nylon prints, but plastic nonetheless. now I ordered an aluminium print, which is pure aluminium made with the selective laser sintering process. Not cheap, about 40 euro for the tube, so ...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Thanks for the pointers EpicenterBryan. I'm going with an aluminium printed torque tube this time. The 320 stylus will have to wait until another revision, as I do not have any and want to use up my 2 mono cutterhead styli first. t tube alu v3.png The rectangular holes are for weight saving / lettin...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hello everyone. I did some calculations of the cutterhead and figured out that the VTA is about 15° as of now. Since I am a big fan of the easiest solution, maybe if I added a 10° kink in the torque tube things will sort themselves out and get me a 25° VTA. I think the only problem with this solutio...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

Hello everyone. I've installed a nema 14 size motor instead of a nema 17. I cannot hear any difference in noise translated to the record. I did notice that the quality of the stepper bearings varies by quite a lot. I've got a Lin engineering stepper motor, which has good bearings, and a wantai stepp...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build

at Grooveguy: Yes I've noticed that indeed on the older overhead style lathes they use a kind of ball and recess at the end of the feedscrews. I've considered this, but found it too expensive a part to make. I've still not got the noise floor down to the level I would like, so that may be masking so...
