VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Hey guys n gals../

The power supply we have rigged up is a CODEGEN 400W ATX 2.03 MODEL: 400X

It has a variety of voltages that you can simply have the wire coming out of the box as, we have it as 12v and the wires straight into the RIAA/EQ

Being indépendant of the groove speed motor means there is no chance of any of that whining come through into the cuts.

I would attach a photo but it's not easy through this forum so PM me and Ill email it to you.

Hope this helps some of you guys out. l.

Sorry mate no, it is all installed now and an absolute pain to open. If you know an electrician then it's a simple fix for them!

i.e. the one which now feeds power to your main unit's iRIAA/EQ circuits.

Thanks in advance ;)
Hi,

Have you find out the answer?

Thanks

There's a button 'upload attachment'. press this. Than a subbox opens. Press 'browse'. Now you can find your file on your computer. Then: press 'add the file'. Press 'Submit'.
See attachment!! :)

there's a small cable that connects the two boards, do you just feed 12v directly in that cable?

I did this today, it removed the noise that changes with the speed of the motor but there's still something that sounds like an electrical noise.

Can you post a audio sample of the noise?

Try a power filter or a behringer hum destroyer..

After many months of testing and headaches I've finally fixed all noises of the vr.

My recommendations in order

Split the power supply of the main unit ( check this thread for how to, although stressful it's quite a cheap and easy fix)

Replace all of souri's RCA cables, keeping lengths as short as possible.

Do not rack all the gear together (unless each rack is isolated from each other, if you don't understand it just keep them stacked and avoid problems)

Remove all lights from the the same power of the machine

Check all digital devices connected to the system for noise (oscilloscope is your friend)

Finally enjoy noiseless cuts!!!

Going back to the original post where the question was, why there is a noise coming from the groove speed motor and if this noise might be due to a «earth loop»:

Yes, this noise is due to a ground loop, mostly between the cutter amp and the main unit.

There are 3 ways to solve this:
1. Split the power supply of the main unit as discussed in this thread
2. Use exclusively (and only) the power accessories that came with the VR
3. Disconnect the Ground Pin of the 12V Power supply of the main unit.

Be aware that the 3rd solution might be dangerous in case of an electrical malfunction.

This is a very interesting topic and the idea to split the psu to two separate psu’s is marvelous!
But I do wonder how this relates to warranty of the VR. Does anyone know if this mod is agreed upon by Souri?
