What labels or famous records were mastered on a Presto 6n?

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

What labels or famous records were mastered on a Presto 6n?

Does anyone know of labels that used a 6n or famous artists/records that were mastered on a 6N? I'm doing a live cutting residency this summer and would love to mention what it was used for "in the day". I know that Sun Records used one a lot. I had also heard about Blue Label Columbia records being mastered on them, but I'm not sure how accurate my memory is with that, as I jsut vaguely remember reading it or hearing it in passing.

Any other interesting tidbits would be appreciated!

Ive seen a photo of Elvis standing next to a Presto lathe, and Im sure it was a 6N. So as you say, that must have been at Sun Studios. It was in an old recording book, maybe someone here has it?

Yes, it looks like a 6N. We pressed the last record issued by Clarion which was The Valentines featuring Bon Scott in a limited edition of 1,000 copies. He told me he sold the Neumann lathe to Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct Festival Records so dont go looking for it in Perth as it ended up on a Sydney scrap heap many years before Festival closed.

Good to see the 6N in such perfect condition. Sorry for the off-topic blurb.

Hey Megamike, a friend fo mine sold a Scully lathe to someone in Perth about six years ago. Any sign of it over there? He couldn't move the black Scully cabinet into his apartment so he left it behind but after getting the lathe up and running, he sold it to a guy in Perth. Has it ever been put to use?

I seem to have read (in an interview in a book on mastering engineers - or was it with Frankford/Wayne Mastering Labs' co-founder Tom Steele) that in the early years of Frankford/Wayne's existence in Philadelphia, they used a Presto 6N with Grampian feedback cutterhead; two major hits cut on this lathe were The Delfonics' "La-La-Means I Love You" on Philly Groove and The Intruders' "Cowboys to Girls" on Gamble (just before F/W got their first Scully 601 type lathe whose earliest use was on The Intruders' follow-up "(Love Is Like a) Baseball Game").
