Fairchild 740 lathe info platter

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Fairchild 740 lathe info platter

Hi people, tonight I was reading the tech infos about 740 model.
These the original words : " 35 pounds aluminum platter for maximum flywheel effect without the problems of attraction associated with steel turntables. "

Here the link : http://www.preservationsound.com/?p=4024

My question is : why attraction ? Against the head or the motor ?

Thanks.

If you're using a iron turntable, some cutterheads (with strong magnets...) might attract to the platter...at least the manual for the Ortofon mono heads says so and recommends either using different platter material (alu/bronce) or a thick (1/2") rubber matt.
Wanted: ANYTHING ORTOFON related to cutting...thx

In the case that a dj dd motor like 1200 style mount a iron platter, could be a problem for magnets of motor and change lightly the speed of turntable lathe ?

Scully lathes also use aluminum platters. The Westrex head magnets are so strong they would be unworkable in the presence of iron or steel. Imagine attempting to mount the head, only to have it pull out of your hand and crush your finger in the magnetic vice grips of Westrex against steel platter. Ouch!
