about lifetime of stylus (with vinyl recorder T560)

hi all.
i'm doing record cutting with vinylrecorder T560 from 1 year ago.

now i'm having problem about lifespan of stylus.
in souri's stylus,my lifespan of stylus is avarage only 20h.
in myshank's,it's avarage only 5h.

i guess my setting or handling is not good.
but i couldn't found what makes no good.

can everyone use over 100h?
what essence govern lifetime of stylus?

this is my setting and handling.

--cutterhead weight
15g(counter is 45g)

--cutterhead setting
it's be set even level with the ground.

in nomarl time(=up stylus),no tension on spring(dashpot).
stylus down on blank(=when i do cutting),there is tension on spring.

i do very carefully when stylus down on blank.

--heating
i don't use to new stylus.
after use about 10h.i get background noise.
so i add heating that level is 5～10 on dial on main unit.

--temparature
souri's black disc -> 45℃
souri's transparent disc -> 35℃

--vacuum tank
set on other table.
so no vibration on cutterhead.

--recording level
it's not so loud.MAX +4db.

--stereo level
not so much.i adjust stereo effect on my DAW.

any help would be appreciated!

we get a minimum of 100 hours with souris stylus.

heating:
black: around 38 degrees (you're too hot)
trans: around 40
no heated stylus at all !

try using slovent to whipe the disks before cutting

but you might tray some destilledwater&dishwashingfluid&alcohol ...

-stylus cleaner
i use stylus clear one by one each time.
now i consider change clear to Anhydrous Ethanol.
it was used with VMS70,i watch when i went professional record press company.
but i wonder it's not for my stylus....?

if someone have more tip for longer stylus lifespan,please post here.
i need your help.

Temepratures of Souri's discs should be kept the same (in my case is like 38-45 degree) since is the same material used. Black blanks has transparent layer on them. Myshank stylues in my case always did better job in terms of longevity, less noise etc. They just have poor very small and fragile heating wires attached which often fall apart,

Hmm about the heating wire, if there is a problem, this is because you certainly heat them too much. Heating wire are just here to heat a little bit the stone nothing more.
Most of people using our stylus don't heat them when it comes as new and add a little bit of heating after many hours of cut ^^

If you have a problem with a heating wire, just send the stylus back here and it will be fixed of course

Hi everybody , and hi.souri as well ... In my case I've been cutting with t550 for almost 6 years ...

It depends ,.. older stylus were much better , they normally lasted for almost 200h if well treated ,.. my machine needs revision ,.. the heating is not working properly anymore ... also the heating coil suffers a lot with transport to long distance ... lately unfortunately mine are arriving sometimes broken by the handling of the post offices ,.
Now I'm cutting 100 h or less sometimes ...
Of course I need a machine revision and next time I go to Europe ...

A good reason for the coil to break appart is the use of too much cleaning stylus fluid ... it sometimes oxidises the coil ... other is overheat .. don't.use the machine for long periods ... 6 and stop .. though souri says 8 ...
But beware of handling ... don't insert it without slack if it is to stretched just the spare vynil can tangle on it and break it ...
As for the no heating at least in my case I never did it ... always at least 10 -15 ° in the main unit ...

What are you using for blanks sand paper

And get Quiet cuts ! I'm very care full with it and clean
The diamond after every cut with nail polish removers use ear buds

Good guide line in todds plastic cutting guide
I suggest you watch this if you have not already

Never touch the diamond with your fingers handle diamond from the heater wires

I don't know how long my shank stylus will last me
But so far so good.

Didn't understand ...
I said 6 hours a day and stop ... I've taken my stylus up to 200h when the machine was less beaten by long hours recording ... nowadays 150h ... tops
But it recorded between master references and dubs almost 100 records a month for the last 6 years ...

noise doesn't increase compare first cut with after 42.5h cut?

i guess myshank's stylus is good.it's just there are critical faults in my setting or handling.

My cuts are quiet at 43 hrs now I'm using no heating just heat from a lamp 35 to 40 deg I'm using my shank blanks and also makrolon clear from local suppliers

Did you have a look at your diamond under the microscope ?

What blanks your using ?

Are you just using heat from lamp or the heat to the stylus cutter diamond ?

Do you clean your records with solution before you cut?

There's one thing I did notice when I don't heat enough the record sounds with background noise.

And I suspect that my weight setting is wrong.
I don't have problem with 7inch.
But wow & flatter come out with 12inch when I set 15g.
Why Wow & flatter come out is my turntable is SL1200 mk3.
the torque is not enough.

So I set 12g with 12inch.
Wow & flatter was gone.

But after few days,wow & flatter came out again.
Because blank warped.
But it's very very little bit warped.
I guess it's acceptable limit.

Helplessly,I set 10g and wow & flatter was gone again.

Anyway I used cutterhead weight is 10g.
I guess it's not good setting.
Anyone can help me?

Marcy let me see if i understood , you are using a t560 from souri´s automatten right ?
The normal operating weight for this machines is 45 g without spring fine ajustment , with it its is 15 g to 20 g as stylus becames blunt ..

but you are using a diferent stylus , does it have a operaring weight ?

When the blank is warped just discard , it can destroy your stylus , and a blank is much cheaper than a stylus .

normally the flutter is related to the weigth of the cutting head , if it is to light as the disc is not entirelly flat it can produce it , i would suggest this , increase the weigth , you have in the technics turntable a ligth at the on button , this one will show you when the stylus begins to drag the disc , set it a little above this limit ...

another thing is the heating i believe you must use a lamp and leave the disc at least 40ºC ...

ok,of course i understood 15g - 20g with spring.
but it comes out wow & flatter when i set even 15g.

yes,i used myshank stylus.it demand 14g with spring.

my recognition is that warp blank don't destroy stylus.
i learned the knowledge from professional.
how everybody think about this?

i guess my setting like this.but i will re-check just in case!

yes,that's right for souri's blank.
but myshank blank don't need use lanp heating.


And I have one more question.
My mat that bought by souri on turntable isn't follow 12inch blank.
So I guess it's not right weight when I set weight with outer of record.

I consider change the mat.
But I can't judge how mat is best.
Soft one or hard one?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Mercy,

I am using MyShank products everydays from 1 year and half.
The average lifespan of the stylus is about 100h in my case.

This is my configuration:

45 to 50gr weight without spring,
16 to 20gr on spring
Myshank blanks heated with lamp at about 30'
Stylus heating at 15 when new, to 40 when is close to die.

You can use lightly warped blanks, no problem.
Regarding wow and flutter, for me cutting with sl1200 was never a solution, is unacceptable for my standards, i cut electronic music mostly, i need deep and solid grooves, so i opted for an SP 10 and now an external motor, both working great!

It happened to me when i changed my turntable to use the stylus just for 10h, and thanks to Steven's (myshank) suggestion, i figured out i didn't calibrated accurately the turntable. So the stylus was cutting out of the axis. I think you should check this first.
You have to make a straight line from the center of one blank till the edge, with a ruler to place it perpendicular to the edge of the turntable (blank on the platter), the you drop down the cutter head and you check the stylus is on the line, and it stays on it for the whole disc. If it is not there you have found your problem...

How do you guys check that weight 10g? 16g? its rather impossible with Souri's tool. I mean maybe if you are VERY delicate you can judge +/- 5g, but in reality the "Error rate" is bigger. I've tried to do it with small scale unit but placing carefuly stylus on it I destroyed the tip... So.. how>?
