Technics prototype hype: Grand Class SL-1200GAE

I'm posting this here rather than in 'Playback' since Technics TTs are a popular choice for lathe cutters (as if you didn't know)....

After discontinuing the SL-12xx line in 2010, Technics have thrown a bone out to fans of their turntable line:

Very early days yet, no spec available... but that doesn't mean we can't spec-ulate!


Aside from looking like an electric hob, it looks pretty solid and seems to nod more to features of the SP range than the SL, suggesting high torque and a high price tag. A high torque, DD, off-the-shelf turntable for the 21st century is certainly an exciting prospect... Time will tell.

I really don't know why technics stopped productions of the SL TT there is still a market
For turntables, I really hope one day there start making these again !

The platter is the same as that of a Technics SP10. Let's hope this end up being the same drive technology!

No. Apparently its being designed from the inside-out. I guess they want to show off the new drive system first... Maybe the tonearm will be optional/third party. If they're going after the high-end market, that would make sense.

interesting. but i ask the obvious question at this point...where the hell is the TONEARM?! is this another one of them Lazer shits? Panasonic i remember them...when i was a little kid i had one of these how many times did i drop that thing down a flight of STAIRS and it still worked!

well it's here(almost) there will be 2 of them a limited edition version with a magnesium tonearm & a few other tweaks (GAE) only 1200 of these and the standard one (G) with an aluminum tonearm. a little pricey by the looks, $4k, but considering what sp 10 mk3's go for it aint that bad

Apparently $4k is for the limited edition... "The Technics 1200GAE is available for a limited run later this summer for about $4,000. The cheaper 1200G will hit stores later this year."

I've talked to two guys today who are suspicious about it. One of them is a trusted fellow whose business involves selling technics TT's, and would love nothing more than to see a reissued sp-10 mk 3. (=sp-02). He is waiting for more data, but he doubts very much that this is a comparable 48 pole TT.

It will be a real shame if this new one doesn't at least beat the specs of the SP10mk2.

Elsewhere, I've seen that the mk 1 had 20 poles.

Is the word that the sp-10 mk 3 has the same specs as the sp-02 motor ....wrong? I think I first saw it on the Hoffman forum and I keep repeating it when it's repeated to me.

I find claims all over that it is a 48-pole motor. Doesn't mean it Is true, though.

It either be great if someone could supply inarguable evidence of the proper specs.
