78rpm cuts w/ sped up source?

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

78rpm cuts w/ sped up source?

Does anyone know any reason I shouldn't cut at 78rpms, with a source that's been sped up, so that if played back at 45 or 33, it plays correctly? I've read the posts about people slowing their source down, cutting at 33 w/ the end result being a record that plays correctly at 45. Wondering if I can reverse that process..

Anyone?

Thanks in advance for your trollish knowledge!

Hi,

You can do that, but it will kill the high frequency response. Consider the bandwidth of the head. Let's say 8 Khz, for the typical Recordio. That would reproduce at 4.6Khz at 45 RPM and 3.4 Khz at 33 RPM when slowed down. That's pretty poor performance.

But if you are into lofi or doom metal and want to erase the high end.

Lo-fi or no-fi!
