Vinyl cutting under a vacuum?
Has anybody ever tried? What would happen. I know sound cannot travel in a vacuum, but vibrations do. So in theory recording vinyl with a stylus under a vacuum should be possible?
Re: Vinyl cutting under a vacuum?
I would imagine yes.
As the recording being projected
is mechanical. no air is needed.

yes, that would be an interesting experiment, maybe less friction in the vacuum would allow more detail.recordboy wrote:I would imagine yes.

There might be problems with heat though.
overheating the head as there would be no escape... yet that depends on usage.
interesting thought.

Re: Vinyl cutting under a vacuum?
you are correct in there would be no way to dissipate the heat via convection, but all objects (whether in vacuum or not) can remove the thermal energy via radiation. I will search through my heat transfer textbook from undergrad for any equations that may apply. Will update soon
Re: Vinyl cutting under a vacuum?
interesting, if I had the equipment I would try myself.

You also couldn't pick up the chip. I can't imagine a single benefit to the groove. If anything there would probably be more springback than usual.

Re: Vinyl cutting under a vacuum?
There was a time when master records where gold sputtered in a vacuum chamber.
But when the nitrocellulose disks came along the process was not adoptable because of the indegrents (oils...) getting out of the lacquer and ruining the master....
so probably nogo for dubs, plastic schould be ok.
heat dissipation will be worse as mentioned, additional cooling to head not easy...
chip pickup also hard.
advanteges? don't think so...
BTW, old emil berliner used to cut some of his plates under water (or alcohol) with a wax chip that was lighter than the medium and therefore floating on it without messing around the groove - so who wants to take a bath with his neumann???
