Rek O Kut M 12 overhead question
Well, should recieve my Challenger any day now been reading the rek o kut catalog about the unit. I was always under the impression that the M12.overhead could not do run ins&outs, just a locked groove because its lack of a hand crank, but in the catalog ,it states that “spiral grooves are possible, plus run in ,run outs.
Looking for some insight on this from anyone that has experience with M12.overhead, how?
Thanks ,
Patrick

If it's the M5 or M12 and not M5S or M12S, the "spirals" they're referring to involve disengaging the feed nut entirely and pushing the carriage inward by hand. I've seen a few very old acetates done this way, and it's abrupt and violent - 1.1 to 1.5 lines per inch at 78. For trackability's sake I wouldn't recommend it at 78, let alone 33 1/3.

Re: Rek O Kut M 12 overhead question
ematchapterv, let me see if i got it right, You mean its not feasible? could easily fuck up a good cut with an untrackable lead out? in other words, the promo is misleading stating the the run ins and outs could be done easily?
starting get the feel that the challenger i got with the M12 and Astatic M41 c.head , is probably Rek O Kuts version of the Recordio! I wonder how the Challenger lathe would stack up against a Recordio,i actually like the sound of the Recodio!
Thanks for the advice,
Patrick

Pretty sure that there is a user manual on here somewhere it should tell you how to do locked run out groove. You may be able to do a run in groove as well not sure.
As for pictures of how it is done see YouTube, there are some videos on there that should make all clear.

Any luck getting that run in and run out to work? I have the same lathe and am trying to figure out the same thing. Thank you for taking the time to read this!socialroots wrote:ematchapterv, let me see if i got it right, You mean its not feasible? could easily fuck up a good cut with an untrackable lead out? in other words, the promo is misleading stating the the run ins and outs could be done easily?

Re: Rek O Kut M 12 overhead question
The m5s and m12s are the ROK overheads with the crank handle that allow you to do lead in and lead out. Without the crank you basically just cut one lpi all the way across the side.
I definitely would not say these are a cheap or base model as they are functionally pretty much the same and are units very capable of a professional cut. I have an m5 pro overhead as well as an m5s pro and it seems that the only difference is the additional crank on the 's' model. The m5 has a little piece of the feedscrew on the far right of the overhead where the crank would attach, it seems like it would be possible to machine a solution that would allow you to add a crank as they both have the same slip/ override gear that allows the crank to function. I actually tried to buy a screw on crank but it would need to be mechanically attached somehow, I could not get it to work out of the box.
Hope this helps.
