Power amp for VR

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Power amp for VR

Hello trolls
I have just set up a VR and have a question about the amp.
If I’m not using the souri amp, how do I know (other than reading the output on back of the unit) how much power is going into the head? I’ve been cutting with the amp set at half volume. The head sounds very loud. There must be some calibration?
My amp is of similar size to the souri amp.
Thanks in advance.

it depends on the source you are cutting from, but basically you need to cut a continuous tone set to 0db on your meter. start with the cutterhead gain all the way down, then gradually increase as you monitor the output from the record you are cutting until it reads 0db as well.

Ok! I should have worked that out! Thanks. More dumb question to follow no doubt.
