Replacement Platter Mats or DIY Alternatives

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Replacement Platter Mats or DIY Alternatives

Hello All,

First post here on Lathe Trolls...

The platter mat on the early Presto 6D that I am cleaning up is torn and creased from being stored on its side for who knows how many years. Are there any vendors that make/sell 16 inch platter mats for transcription tables that I can modify to work? I feel like I did a fairly thorough search but I wanted to ask the group first before I begin to go down the DIY route.

In regard to DIY I have access to a laser cutter at the Baltimore Hacker Space that is large enough to cut an appropriate mat but I will need to determine the best material to use that wont release overly noxious fumes during the cutting process. From a brief discussion about the laser cutter, my initial options are looking like natural rubber, cork or delrin as they are all materials they are willing to cut.

Any recommendations or experience using these potential materials?

Thanks!

KC

Hey all,

Big thanks for the replies and PM's. I should be good to go now.

Once I have the platter mat installed, I will update this thread with my thoughts and pictures.

Hey all,

A bit late it getting this reply up... Overall I am very happy with the platter mat for my Presto EU7 setup. It was purchased from ebay seller Number1Gasketshop in the UK. Crappy picture but it was the only one on my phone...
