new MyShank pressed blank records

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

new MyShank pressed blank records

I know the pressed blank records are brand new, but has anybody already got them and cann share his experience?
Is the material softer for it to require no heating? And if yes, would this mean they are not as durable as the old ones?

Yes I cut one yesterday for the first time.
I got the colored kit from myshank.
The records are beautiful (exactly like a 180 gr that you buy in the store)
They are super flat and have less background noise than the old ones.
Colors are very nice.
I have to ask to Steven if it will be possible in the future to have the picture disks :-)

I am super satisfied.

I heated the old records to 37 degrees. Yesterday I tried cutting the new one at 30 degrees (even if maybe it's not necessary) and the background noise was better than the previous discs.

Update:
I made 8 disks today.
I confirm that is no need to heat the disc.
Background noise is like a store-bought pressed record.
I've been cutting for 3 years... I've never had such an excellent result.

Any chance to post a photo? I wonder how the labels look like when they are put on the record. Does it look like a pressed record? Thanks!

That is great feedback, thank you!

I think the question about durability can only MyShank (and time) answer.

Does cutting on pressed records require a different needle?

pressed blanks would be PET material?

if it is PET then it has very similar properties to PETG... so I would expect close to same results as PETG. that's if bio vinyl is PET. (Rockwell hardness scale says they are about the same)

"Recycled plastic only (80%) - Organic Colorant for many colors"

Colorant and being a 80% mix cause more diamond wear? vs a clear PET pressed blank.

With normal blanks I can cut a lead out past the label so the lead out would stop when it runs into the center sticker label. I am guessing it would be hazard for the diamond to hit the center label indent?

Hello jimmyjim,

We have cut over 100 12"s with these blanks now. LP and EP length on Clear and Black. Diamond. No heating. No noticeable degradation of the stylus.

One of the runs was for a customer we have worked with since 2019 (prestigious label in the US) - this was their feedback:

"I can already vouch for this fantastic product… cleanest sounding lathe cut ever?!”

They are made from a bespoke blend of plastics that My Shank has been developing for +4 years now.

Total game changer.
