Laboratory Filtering Flask as Chip Jar?
Hi all,
I just ordered the oft-recommended player piano vacuum box from Ragland on eBay, and just need to decide on how I want to catch debris. Has anyone tried using a laboratory filtering flask?

Seems like it could work pretty well, in theory, with a small tube from the side leading to the cutter head and the vacuum hose attached at the top. I still might just construct something from a large mayo jar or something, but this seems like it could be an elegant solution.
Good idea? Bad idea? Indifferent?
Thanks,
George

I use a hard plastic rectangular jar from Target with plumbing fittings for the input and output.

I got pickle jar for mine. Couple barbs and some surgical tubing and your off!
I split my vac platter and suction with a y valve so when im not using the suction i can close it off at the y valve. Seems to work pretty well, but i haven't done a whole lot of chip, mostly embossing

Re: Laboratory Filtering Flask as Chip Jar?
Thanks for the suggestions all! I should say, though, what I'm really asking is if there is any reason I *shouldn't* use the flask... I like the idea of not drilling holes in a lid, and this way I would have one solid piece and just 2 tubes (they make these nice open stoppers for the flask that nest with each other so you don't have to drill perfect holes for the top tube). It's probably impractical in some way I haven't realized yet, but very little about any of this endeavor has been particularly "practical" so far (just ask my credit rating). If anybody says "DON"T DO IT!!" in the next 24 hours, I'll clean out a JIF jar and call it a day.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. So just do it. Many ingenious things have come about because a few brave lateral thinkers tried something that others didn't think of or dismissed as nonsensical.
I wouldn't have tried it for two reasons. Firstly, because glass can break and I always have things flying through the room. And secondly, because I wouldn't know how to clean the thing if it was full of a mixture of chips and baby powder.
But that shouldn't stop you. Let us know what experiences you have with it.

I like your attitude, thanks! I was thinking about the cleaning, too, but I figure a quick swish of water in the flask then pour that through a strainer and maybe a quick wipedown with a sponge on a bendable stick (I believe they call it a bottle brush...) should do it. I'm going for it! If it doesn't work for lathe waste, I'll turn it into an off-brand Chemex and enjoy a potentially toxic pourover (did I mention I'm a barista?farmersplow wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 4:54 pmThe proof of the pudding is in the eating.
