fixing RCA MI-11850-C cutting head

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

You need to rework the Creepy Crawlers oven and plastic.

I tried hardware store gasket rubber. First pass did not sound good. But it did work.

It looks a lot better then it sounds unfortunately.

I do remember those things shrinking and becoming brittle over time though. There also is a fishing lure making kit on amazon that could be an option, but usually those rubber fishing lures are too flexible. I might give that a try after my current experiment.

I made a mold to create new dampening, but had some mold material from polyurethane left over, so I'm also going to try it as a damper.

Heres what i got so far. I used liquid electrical tape in green up front and heatshrink tube outback because it was easy to get on there.

I found some of the mold materials we were talking about, but i got urethane and silicon, which i read might have a problem. Its all here so i guess well see.

But that mf'ing coil broke again! I got some 30awg coming i might try out if its appropriate. I gotta deep dive into coil winding info

In a stroke of (bad) luck, my RCA head has come down with the same issue. I'm going to be trying out some ideas me and soulbear talked about for forming a new damper. In the meantime I got my damper out in mostly one piece. Heres a photo
Hello! Did you manage to find a replacement for this damper?

I ended up cutting one from the left over mold material, but i also made a mold of the damper and im going to try and mold a few. I was just about to test it when my coil broke again.

The mold urethane is "smooth on" brand. It ended up seemingly having the same consistency as the damper. I mixed it up for the mold and had about a 1/4 inch in the bottom of a solo cup, so i let it dry, and cut it to shape. The harder part was the relief in the larger block that goes to the armature screw. It has a flat washer that sits in the damper, but the urethane doest drill well, so i used a dremel type tool with a small sanding bit to route out a place for the washer to sit.

I poured the silicon into the mold. Didn't seem to suck into the mold well. Almost like i need a secone air hole for it to pour and fill. Well see, not very high hopes.

And i started fabbing a coil former to wind a new coil on. I might repair the old coil in the meantime to get this damper test going
