VR vibrating motor

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

VR vibrating motor

Heya!

On one of my VR's the motor is vibrating so much causing the tube, head, baseplate to vibrate too
Right side where the wires go in is the worst

I can hear it too loud in cuts mostly on higher pitch and marks (I do these automated)

Is this something that varies from VR to VR? Other VR is dead silent

Is this something I can fix myself? Or is the motor dying. It feels like it's touching somewhere inside
Don't really want to open it up if I don't have to

Have to add: wheel on the left turns even when nut is loose. So something not 100% right there too maybe

Is this a new VR, or one you’ve used before without any issues? Have you tried running it with the vacuum system turned off? We’ve never seen a motor vibrate that badly, so it would be good to pinpoint exactly what’s vibrating. Can you tell if it’s the motor itself (can you feel it mainly around the motor body in the overhead), or could it be something else like the coupling to the black wheel knocking or something?

Taking the overhead apart would be a total pain in the ass, so hopefully you won’t need to! If you haven’t already, definitely try it with the vacuum off and see if you can isolate the source of the vibration to exactly where it’s coming from.

If you’ve already done that and it’s definitely the motor, then hopefully someone with more experience taking apart the overhead has some good tips!

Ah ok i get you, and have you checked the RCA on the back of the Main Unit in case it has come loose and opened the motors circuit?

I'm not very clear

The problem manifests itself when spinning top speed (auto lead-in / mark)
When back to normal cutting speed it probably turns into inaudible rumble
I can feel it when touching the head and part of tube where motor is
I can't feel this on my other VR

Is this something that can be the result of another part not moving correctly?

I always used this as a 2nd VR by hand, so motor never spinning top speed

Every VR we have worked on has this issue of motor noise in the groove when the motor is full speed for lead in and markers. It is the same for any lathe with an inline motor directly coupled to the feedscrew.

I am surprised your other VR does not do this when on full speed! Very lucky to have that :)

Yeah that is great! They definitely do vary from machine to machine but never heard a dead silent one. Hold onto that one!

If you cut a silent groove (no amp on), start with groove distance low and increase gradually does it intensify or change this noise?

Have you oiled the lead screw and also inside behind the wheel?
