Anti-spammer attempt

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Anti-spammer attempt

I'm going to try out a system for a few days...I will have to personally activate new accounts. I've been getting about 8 new members a day, and most of them are creepy spammers with ads or porn in their URLs. I don't have the time to delete them all. Maybe they are benign, but I don't really get it.

I fear this will discourage new "real" members, but I'm hoping they can be patient and wait for me to approve them. It should just take a day or so, usually.

eh. Too much work. but if anyone knows anything about php and can offer advice on how to delete 100's of fake accounts without using several keystrokes for each.....that would be much appreciated! Some of these accounts lead to trojan viruses if you click the websites on their member pages....so be careful.

The only way you can keep the spamers from signing up is to not allow automatic signups. Unfortunately that is what it has come to. The spamers have ruined email, now they want to ruin all our forums. Over on Yahoo Groups, I have seen several forums literally shut down because of the spamers invading them. Nobody wants to sign on a forum expecting to read about what he is interested in, and instead being confronted with several posts about the latest investment scam or how to enlarge his manhood. As a minimum, you should require email verification of every new signup request. Yes, its more work, but if you want to keep this forum clean, thats what its going to require.

i share your opinion, need work a lot, but its the best solution for that GREAT forum
